Vary these games by putting different numbers of numbered cards and coloured cards in a bag. Find the conditions for the games to be fair. Players choose either even or odd for the numbers game and same or different for the colours game then draw 2 cards at random from the bag. They win or lose according the whether the sum of the numbers is even or odd or whther the colours are the same or different.

In this game players combine two given numbers to get as close to a target as possible using one of the operations: addition +, subtraction -, or multiplication ×, and each number once and only once.
Download the cards for this game from the AIMING HIGH website. You need cards for the integers from -9 to +9 and cards for the targets.

The workshop takes you on a path from first experiences of numbers, both in history and for individual learners, discovering how arithmetic in school is governed by the the 4 simple rules of Group Theory. Time and time again learners need to widen their knowledge of numbers so that all equations can be solved. For example positive numbers are not sufficient to solve the equation 5 + x = 2 so you need negative numbers, and integers are not enough to solve the equation 4x = 1 so you need rational numbers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• review of what learners know about functions;
• development of a better understanding of how functions combine a series of operations;
• gain fluency in using function notation e.g learn how a series of operations is written down as an algebraic expression;
• learn the terms input (independent variable) and output (dependent variable).

Start with the graph of y = x^2. Translate it to the left by a distance b/2a and down by a distance c as in the illustration. This results in the graph of y=ax^2+ bx + c.

What do you notice about the points P and Q and the point where this graph cuts the y axis?
