The Zandvlei Trust Photo Competition deadline is just 3 weeks away! The theme is Zandvlei — conservation and community so if you have any pictures of the Zandvlei area, whether its of wildlife, people, or landscapes, we’d love to see them.

In addition to contributing to a calendar for all to enjoy the Zandvlei and its many residents and features, the pictures critically help in our advocacy efforts. The Zandvlei Estuary is a place of great diversity, and pictures from the community play an enormous role in helping us showcase everything this unique space has to offer, and protect.

This shot is last year’s winner, Paul Funston’s “Dawn Paddle."

Prizes are the following ORMS vouchers:
1st place: R1500
2nd place: R1000
3rd place: R500

While some of us were hacking away like mad at small (alien invasive) trees above Boyes Drive on the weekend, Trust chairperson Damian was planting some down below, in the park between the picnic area and yacht club.
We have found if they are not securely protected, the wind, dogs, soccer balls and the like take them out.
The plan is that our grandchildren will sit in their shade.
The planting continues.

Yesterday (Saturday) with a chill wind whipping the mountain slope, a small group of us got stuck into the Port Jackson invaders on the slope above Boyes Drive. With eyes and noses running like robbers on the run, we cut, sawed and hacked the !@ #$% out of those nasties.

Remember that tomorrow we'll be hacking – plenty of parking around the intersection of Old and New Boyes Drive (as per map).
Wear longs and sturdy footwear, and gloves if you have.
Bring hand saws and/or loppers, and water. It's physical work but not exactly hard labour. It's good for you and it's good for, you know, that nature thing.

This year, we are proud to announce that Pam Golding and ORMS are again sponsors for the event, providing prizes for both the adult and youth categories.

Entires close October 31st so you have a month to submit you photos and help make this year's calendar a beautiful representation of Zandvlei.

For our "1st working Saturday" this month we'll be doing a follow-up hacking on Boyes Drive, meeting at 09h30 at the Old-New Boyes Drive intersection (plenty of parking there).
We'll be working mostly low down, so no hard slogging involved. However, still wear tough (long sleeve and leg) clothes and footwear, gloves if you have, a sunhat and bring water. Also bring whatever cutting tools you have - hand saw, loppers and the like.

Our Spring Talk tomorrow is with Dr Jessica da Silva, principal scientist with the SA National Botanical Institute, about our most loved h**p (she's a h**patoligist) - the Western Cape Leopard Toad.

Last Wednesday Coleen Moloney delivered an inspired presentation on the blue fleet, a whole community of marine organisms. She primarily focused on blue bottles, blue buttons, and by-the-wind sailors, but also detailed other animals at the wind-sea interface. These animals and organisms float on the surface, often using air pockets or bubbles, using wind and water currents to move around.

She encouraged us all to take a closer look at the shoreline where these creatures often wash up. Given their proximity, here is some non-medical advice for what to do if you get stung by a bluebottle based on the latest research:
Remove tentacles or stinging cells (usually only 1% discharge immediately so do it carefully to avoid stimulating the rest).
Break down the toxin with a vinegar rinse or hot sea water, second best option is cold sea water, and the worst are fresh water, a cold pack, or urination!
Stings may trigger a quick and severe reaction, so call EMS if needed.
