On World Ocean’s Day, it’s worth remembering that Zandvlei doesn’t exist in isolation. As an estuary, it sits between the freshwater rivers and the ocean, an interconnected system that is constantly changing and teeming with life. Water flows both ways between the estuary and the ocean, making what we do in each of these spaces influential for the other.

In the wise words of Hugh Grant: "If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
Westlake Garden gives us exactly that. This little roadside spot has been an area of constant work over the last several months. It still isn't in its final form, with clearing and planting work ongoing, but that doesn't mean that there aren't beautiful treasures growing within it. It's sure to be a treat for anyone who ventures off Main Road and looks closely.

A Cape Weaver in the early stages of nest building. The male does all the work, weaving each strip carefully into place, one at a time.
If you've walked along the vlei, you've almost certainly spotted their nests hanging from reeds and overhanging branches. Thank you to Thierry de Ryckel for this unique and incredibly vivid shot.

During the week we were alerted to a build-up of litter along the little stream that runs alongside and behind the Lakeside train station.
What with a deluge coming, we thought it prudent to go take a look: I mean, how long could it take, a few hours tops?
Our venerable chairperson Damian mobilised two of our constant gardeners, Peter and Robert, and they set to work early bells. Around 9 am the S.O.S. went out - bring in the reserves! So our third gardener and litter hero William was dispatched.
It turned out to be a mother lode of trash dumped over a number of years by a bunch of gangtas who had lived in the dense bush there.*
Around 7 hours and more than 100 bags later all the big stuff had been bagged. After the coming rain event we'll have to go back for all the small stuff; maybe Friday. Otherwise all that would get washed into the vlei.
* there still is one occupied tent in there, a matter which we have taken up with the local councillor.

IN BREAKING NEWS ...
The Glass Recycling Company has informed us that the Lakeside glass litter 'igloo' bins are to be removed this coming Monday, 11 May.
We really tried, for decades, to keep the system legit and the place clean, but eventually the situation became untenable and the pressure to have them removed mounted.
Mostly – it turned out – it was not locals who were 'dumping' but other @ #$%^ people from far and wide.

"It is with regret that we have to inform you ..."
The glass recycling bins on Lakeside Main Road was one of the Trust's intitial projects, but they have outlived their purpose.
Excessive abuse of the site as a general dump (including a certain local retailer dumping their toxic neon bulbs both there and in our garden opposite) has led to vested parties requesting we have them removed.
This in spite of our concerted efforts to keep the place tidy, which we cannot do on a daily basis. The Council owns the land and they too are tired of seeing it abused.
We have requested The Glass Recycling Company to remove them. We're not sure when this will happen, but it's best people start using alternate recycling services.
