We're excited to announce our second speaker in our Spring Talks series: Coleen Moloney, a marine ecologist with a specialty in researching ecosystems and the dynamics of how biological processes vary across time and spatial scales. Her presentation will show how the "Blue Fleet" of organisms exists within vast costal systems along the Southern African coast.

Spring Talks Festival
Here it is folks, the full programme for our annual spring talks fest - stuff you didn't know about birds, bluebottles, toads and sandprawns.
Each Wednesday through September at the Imperial (Lakeside) Yacht Club. Entry free. Doors open at 6 pm. Refreshments will be served after.

This image from the Daily Maverick pictures of the week: a worker in the Philippines clearing litter from a river. Imagine every Monday morning, off to work?!
Something around 9/10 of all the oceanic litter in the world comes form southeast Asia - mainly China, the Indian subcontinent, Indonesia and the Phillipines.
(We'll try not to moan so load when we have to haul out the much lesser load from the Sand-Langvlei canal) :)

We’re trilled to present Craig Glatthaar as our first speaker for our annual Spring Talks, a series of public presentations on Zandvlei-related topics for anyone with an interest in the environment, conservation, and science. This presentation will explore bird corridors and how indigenous fynbus gardens can create a system of nature habitat “stepping stones” from mountain to mountain, inspired by Craig’s current work with Ingcungcu Sunbird Restoration.

We’re entring sour fig season and you’ll find these beauties popping up all around Zandvlei. Whatever name you know them as, these edible plants are a treat for many types of animals, whether it be for their leaves, flowers, fruit, or pollen.
For centuries, people have used the plant for its medicinal properties, and although today many plant it for landscaping, a quick dive into its history reveals what a truly invaluable species it is!

The work of Karen Hart and the hackers is continuous! If you've ever doubted the impact few people can have on the environment, you need only see these results. Beautiful fynbos popping up through the steep mountainside of cleared Port Jacksons. Restoring biodiversity, plus a treat for all the nearby animals!

"To hack, or not to hack, that is the question" – William Weatherapp.
We have planned to join the Cape Bird Club in a hack of invasive plants along the Lakeside/Westlake shore. However, our weather apps are telling us rain is on the way. It looks like it will start gently, so let's add a raincoat to the list of things to bring (a bit of rain, pah!).
The things include saws and loppers, and small sq**rt- or drip-type bottle for herbicide. Wear long clothes suitable for work and weather, and boots are advised. And drinking water.
We'll meet at the end of Promenade Road close to the Lakeside station at 2 pm and plan to work for about 2 hours.
