On 18 July, we came together to honour Nelson Mandela Day in the best way we know how, through service, kindness, and community.
To celebrate 67 years of service inspired by Nelson Mandela's legacy, the Fish Hoek Lions Club hosted a Dinner & Quiz Night for the wonderful residents of Happy Valley Shelter.
Our goal was simple: to give the shelter's clients the opportunity to enjoy an evening that felt just a little more normal – a night filled with laughter, good food, friendly competition, and genuine connection. For a few hours, it wasn't about the challenges of everyday life; it was about sharing a meal, having fun, and creating lasting memories together.
Our incredible Lions members and volunteers prepared a delicious dinner, served a fantastic dessert, and hosted a quiz night that had everyone smiling, laughing, and cheering each other on. The joy in the room was infectious, reminding us that some of the greatest gifts we can give are our time, compassion, and presence.
A very special thank you goes to Fish Hoek Service Centre, whose generous financial contribution towards the food helped make this evening possible. Your continued commitment to serving our community is truly appreciated, and we are grateful for your partnership in making a difference in the lives of others.
To every Lion and volunteer who gave up their Saturday evening to cook, serve, host, and spend time with the residents of Happy Valley Shelter, thank you. Your generosity, enthusiasm, and servant hearts truly embodied the spirit of Ubuntu.
As Nelson Mandela once said:
"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others."
Thank you to the team and residents of Happy Valley HOME for welcoming us so warmly. It was a privilege to share this special evening with you, and we hope it brought as much joy to you as it did to all of us.
Together, we are reminded that changing the world doesn't always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts with a warm meal, a shared laugh, and a community that cares.
