🌍 WISDOM IS WEALTH:

Lessons from the Iteso Table

Our Southern African Regional Executive Director, Mr Okey Machesa, who comes from Zimbabwe, sat down with us to talk about a way of life that shows what real richness looks like.

The Iteso people, whose homeland lies across the border of Kenya and Uganda, prepare and share their meals almost entirely with what the land gives them:

🏺 Clay pots that keep food and drink cool
🥥 Calabash and gourd cups for drinking
🍃 Banana leaves used as covers and holders
🪵 Hand-carved wooden bowls and utensils
🌿 Natural ways to keep flies away

Nothing is wasted. Everything has a purpose.
There is a lesson here for all of us. When we use the resources we have wisely and with intention, we don't just get by, we thrive.

Richness isn't only about what we can buy. It's also the knowledge our elders kept about the natural world around us.

At the African Kingdoms Diaspora Alliance, we believe this heritage is worth protecting, celebrating and passing on.

🎥 Watch the full interview with Mr Okey Machesa, and tell us in the comments: what traditional wisdom from your community still guides how you live today?

African Royals Arrive Ahead of Emorimor’s Fourth Coronation Anniversary in Kenya

African kings, queens, princes and cultural leaders have started arriving in Uganda ahead of the fourth coronation anniversary of Iteso cultural leader Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Etomeileng Emolot III, scheduled for October 29–31 in Malaba, Kenya.

The celebrations will be held at Achunet Stadium in Amagoro Division, Busia County, under the theme “Celebrating Our Cultural Diversity and Heritage, Building Our Palace.”

Among the royal dignitaries who arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Tuesday were South African Khoi-San paramount chief Nkozi Molefe Phallarg, Prince Kwazi Zulu and Prince Thulani Zulu.

The visitors were welcomed by officials of the Iteso Cultural Union with traditional songs before proceeding to Kenya.

Prince Thulani Zulu called for Africans to reconnect with their roots and strengthen relationships across the continent, while Queen Cynthia Nzilikazi Khumalo urged traditional leaders to work together despite colonial-era borders that divided communities with shared cultural identities.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Kenyan President William Ruto are expected to attend, alongside other African monarchs, including Eswatini’s King Mswati III and Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.

Organisers expect more than 80 kings, 80 queens and over 50,000 visitors, with more than 100 delegations from the African diaspora also anticipated.

The three-day event will feature cultural exhibitions, a symposium, a football tournament and traditional music performances, with organisers aiming to promote African heritage, unity and stronger relations between Uganda and Kenya.

The celebrations will also highlight the Iteso community in Kenya and its cultural ties with communities in Uganda.

Papa Emorimor was enthroned in 2022 and has championed cultural identity and the role of cultural institutions in advancing education, entrepreneurship and environmental conservation.
