This is the situation a Christian family recently faced in southwestern Bangladesh.
For Bangladeshi Christians who leave Islam to follow Jesus, persecution is a lifelong journey. Kulsum knows this firsthand. She trusted Jesus 15 years ago. She and her family are leaders in their community. She has also been actively involved in a women’s discipleship program supported by Open Doors local partners.
Since their conversion, the family has faced pressure from their Muslim community yet have remained hopeful that the people of their village would accept them.
But recent events have escalated the situation, leading to a night of terror for the family.
At midnight, a mob of more than 200 people came to their house and banged on their front door. As soon as the group entered, they demanded Kulsum’s mobile phone and searched for Christian-related material. Then they targeted her son, Kanon, first questioning him why his official documents still list him as Muslim. They threatened his government job. “They were not asking me anything; all the questions were directed at him,” Kulsum says. “Some even tried to beat him, and I could do nothing but pray.”
As the pressure increased, the crowd demanded that Kanon renounce his faith in Jesus. Under extreme pressure and fear, Kanon had no choice but to do so.
Kulsum shared, “Faith is in the heart, not in the mouth. I know my son had to say those words under pressure, but deep inside, he knows Christ and the truth of salvation.”
The family is still living in fear. However, Kulsum shared, “I would like to praise the Lord that through this incident, many people in the district and even across Bangladesh have heard the name of Jesus Christ.”
She asks us to pray for Kanon, that the “Holy Spirit will give him the answers he could not give at that time, and also pray for his safety, as only the Lord can protect us.”
