When young Africans speak about self-improvement, the conversation almost always turns to CVs.
"What certificate should I get?" "What course should I do?" "What qualification will employers notice?"
These are important questions. But even during my time as jobseeker, as a manager and recruiter in both private and civil society, they were incomplete.
Some of the most valuable skills you will ever acquire will never appear on your CV.
Many of them show out the moment you arrive at an interview or when selling your business concept or product. Formality, dressing, communication and respect.
A company that allows bum-shorts and skinny jeans will not employ you, if you come wearing them to the interview. A company that advertise on whatsapp will not respond word notations instead of full sentences. Even if they wanted to be a client of your business, they wont.
Many of your little actions answer to the employer or potential client some very important questions:
Are you respectful. Can you manage your emotions under pressure? Can you negotiate without creating enemies? Can you listen before responding? Can you read a room? Can you persuade people? Can you lead without authority? Can you remain disciplined when nobody is supervising you? Can you recover from failure?
These skills rarely earn certificates. Yet they often determine who succeeds. Reading widely does more than increase knowledge. It expands your imagination.
Learning emotional intelligence teaches empathy improves your leadership (more on the subject later). Studying or just reading about psychology makes you a better communicator.
Practising public speaking teaches confidence. Writing develops clear thinking. Isnt it nice to be able to write something without using AI?
Every book you read quietly remodels your mind. Even a novel. Every difficult conversation handled well without insults strengthens your character. Every new challenge faced with humility makes you a better human being.
Not every lesson is for display. Some education is deeply personal. Some growth is invisible. you have to want it. Seek it on youtube or free classes on websites like UDemy, Coursera, etc.
The greatest education is not just collecting certificates. It is deliberately rebuilding yourself into a wiser, calmer, more capable human being.
That is what I call "self titan-remodelling". The deliberate, lifelong reconstruction of one's mind, character, discipline and emotional intelligence through continuous learning and practice.
Africa needs graduates. But it also needs people who never stop educating themselves long after graduation. Many who self-improve, look like they are graduates even when they have never been to university
