Throughout the developing world, working donkeys face a high risk of abuse and neglect due to their stoic nature, which often masks their physical pain and exhaustion. Their kind, good-natured dispositions make them ideal for use by women and children.
Throughout the uMngeni SPCAโs district, donkeys are commonly utilized by impoverished communities as beasts of burden for transporting water, food, wood, and scrap metal. Because these animals continue to work under extreme conditions, they frequently suffer from hidden, systemic mistreatment.
The National SPCA (NSPCA) runs a National Donkey Protection Project, committed to improving the lives of working donkeys. The programme applies a holistic approach that addresses different aspects of the life of these animals.
Not all working donkeys are mistreated. Have a look at this heart-warming report on the NSPCAโs page about an inspection carried out during a tour of the Northern Cape by the project.

uMngeni SPCA Management Committee Chairperson Monika Host commented,โ Our Inspectorate staff are quite aware of the risks faced by these animals and how to identify and deal with any mistreatment they uncover when out in the field. If you witness or suspect any instance of donkey abuse, exhaustion, or illegal transport within the region, do not rely on social media messages, as immediate action is required. Please call our 24-hour emergency number 082 567 8297.โ
