Signs of illness in birds: Tail Bobbing


As we continue to talk about health and signs of illness in birds, we need to talk about tail bobbing.

But what is tail bobing?
“A slight up-and-down tail motion with each breath can indicate increased breathing effort.”

(Note that mild tail bobbing after exercise may be normal briefly)

It is important to note tail bobbing as a sign to go to the vet when your bird has been persistently bobbing while resting, usually with exaggerated motion.
There can also be accompanying lethargy or puffing of feathers.

Don’t wait until your bird is sick. Make sure that you know which is your nearest avian vet (or avian experienced vet for those in cities without exotic vets).

Avo found his forever home!

We have recently adopted Avo from Cheeky Beaks. Firstly we thank Cheeky Beaks for assisting in the whole adoption process, and also helping and giving valuable advise. This picture was taken about 4 hours after avo got home . We gave Avo a large cage, toys, chop...and within an hour Ago got out of the cage walking all over and talking non stop. Avo is happy. He/she brings so much joy to our lives, and livelihood into out home. Avo talks and mimic the whole day, every morning when we open Avo we hear a non stop hallo Avo...hello Avo...hello Avo. Then chirps, and non stop laughter all day long. Avo is already part of our family... Once again thank you4 Cheeky Beaks. You guys do a great job in fostering birds and helping them find new loving homes

A small sprinkle of healthy seeds.
Crunch goodness: spekboom leaves, almond flakes and viola flower.
Fruit: grape, pomegranate, naartjie.
Sprouts.
Greens: spinach and thyme topped with red lentil couscous

My noise level? We can be chatty and expressive, especially when we want attention or are excited to see our people.

My most annoying vocalisation? Like most sun conures, we can get loud when excited or calling for our favourite people.

My cutest vocalisation? Sweet chirps, gentle whistles, happy muttering, and soft little chatter.

My flight ability? Albi is not flighted. Habib can fly a bit, though not very confidently.

Can I step up? Yes! We both know how to step up and enjoy interacting with people.

Do I bite? Only if we feel frightened or overwhelmed, and we do best with patient, gentle handling.

Am I social? Absolutely! We love being part of the family and spending time with our humans.

What type of family do I want? A loving home with plenty of time, affection, and interaction for both of us together.

What kind of cage do I need? A spacious dome top cage with lots of room for toys, climbing, and playtime.

What do I like to eat? Fresh chop, quality pellets, and healthy treats make us very happy birds.

Do I pluck? No, we have beautiful healthy feathers!

When to seek immediate veterinary care


Emergency signs in pet birds can progress from “concerning” to life-threatening very quickly. Birds often hide illness until they’re critically ill, so visible severe symptoms usually mean the situation is urgent.

A bird should be seen urgently if it has:

* open-mouth breathing/rapid breathing with tail bobbing
* severe lethargy (may include drooped wings)
* inability to perch and/or severe weakness
* active bleeding/major trauma
* seizures
* toxin exposure (eg ingested cleaning agents left lying around the home).
* stopped eating

For birds, waiting “until tomorrow” can sometimes make the difference between recovery and death.
It is also vital that you know which is your nearest avian vet (or vet with parrot expertise for those in cities without exotic vets).
Do not hesitate when it comes to medical care.
You can’t ever buy time, but you can ensure that you can afford a vet and/or have pet insurance and/or have funds saved for an emergency.

Booboo het onmiddelik deel van ons huis geword en word ook lekker bederf.Sy het ons ook beide aanvaar en ons twee word beide toegelaat om haar te cuddle.Ons hou haar ook streng op haar dieet met gekookte vars groete ,hoender mince en haar pallets.Sy word ook met vars pere appels aarbeie koei vrug ens bederf.Wanneer sy natuurlike sien ons eet wil sy natuurlik saam eet en raas dan verskriklik tot ons haar met n neut of ietsie bederf om stil te bly.Sy raak ook soms moeilik waneer sy onder die koerante ingaan en dit in stukkend skeur maar ons laat haar maar begewe en ons glo sy sal met tyd ook dit afleer.Ek ek Lizinda sit nou ook daagliks langs haar hok terwyl ons n 1000 stuk puzzle sit en pak.Dan mompel sy graag binne mond maar saans wanneer sy toe gemaak is vir die koue aande praat sy woorde soos hallo ens.
Sy doen baie goed by ons en nou deel van ons familie.
