As a registered NPO parrot rescue, we rely heavily on the kindness and generosity of the public to continue helping parrots in need.
Many people see a bird arrive at rescue and then celebrate when that bird finds a loving home, but there is a great deal that happens in between.

Donations help us provide:
• Nutritious food for the birds in our care
• Toys and enrichment to keep intelligent parrots mentally stimulated
• Safe, appropriate perches for healthy feet and beaks
• Veterinary care, including routine check-ups, medications and emergency treatment
• Transport costs for rescues, veterinary visits, and moving birds to foster homes
• Cages for incoming birds
• Refurbishment and repairs of donated cages to ensure they are safe and suitable for future residents

Every bird that comes through our doors requires time, care, and resources. Whether a donation is large or small, it directly impacts the lives of the parrots we rescue.

Thank you to every person who supports our mission. Your donations do not simply fund a rescue; they give neglected, abandoned, surrendered, and abused parrots a second chance at a happy and healthy life.

The nutrition does not start when the food reaches the bowl.

It starts much earlier, with the formulation.

A complete and balanced bird food should not rely on guesswork. Every vitamin, mineral, amino acid, and trace element should be there for a reason.

That is the point of vet formulation. It gives your bird a consistent nutritional foundation every day, so the rest of the bowl can add variety, enrichment, and enjoyment.

Built for the bird first.

Parrot behavior: eye pinning👀

Eye pinning is a common and important behavior in parrots. It is important that you understand what it means in relation to their other body language in order to understand your parrot.

Parrot eye pinning is the rapid, voluntary dilation and constriction of a parrot's pupils.

🎥BirdNerdSophie has a great YouTube video discussing parrot eye pinning that we highly recommend watching:

The parrot digestive system

A parrot’s biology is very different to our as they are not mammals. What this means is their body works differently and their signs of illness might not look how you expect.

We want to share this video on the parrot’s digestive system by BirdNerdSophie on YouTube so that you can be educated on your bird’s body and thus understand their needs and behaviors better.

Please take some time and watch the complete video.

Kokkie found his forever home!

A message from his adopter:
He settled in soo well, we renamed him to Eddy so we now have Echo and Eddy,

It was quite an insane turn around in our house with him as an add on.
After about 3 days of having him my female ringneck let me touch her for the first time ever. And since then has continued to become more tame with me
He is very tame and cute , so she gets very vocal when he has attention, but since having him she has stopped her constant screaming and has actually become more playful with her toys.

She every now and then squaks at him, usually when I give them food and his talking to me.

Thank you for adopting him!

🦜💚 OUR FEATHERED HOPE FAMILY IS GROWING! 💚🦜

We are so excited to officially welcome Happy Wings Parrot Sanctuary to our Feathered Hope Box Drive! 🥹✨

This means that you can now choose to donate a Feathered Hope Box towards:

🪶 Brainy Birds Parrot Rescue & Rehabilitation
🪶 Cheeky Beaks Parrot Rescue
🪶 Happy Wings Parrot Sanctuary 💚

For those who don’t know — our Feathered Hope Boxes were created to help parrots in rescue who are waiting for homes, healing, recovering, or simply needing enrichment while these amazing rescues do their absolute best for them 🥹

The reality is… rescues are overflowing. There are so many parrots needing help, love, enrichment and safe places to land. The people running these rescues pour their hearts into these birds every single day, and they deserve all the support we can give. 💚

✨ How it works:
🦜 R300 Feathered Hope Box – suitable for extra small to small/medium birds
🦜 R500 Feathered Hope Box – suitable for medium to large parrots

And you have 2 options when donating:

📦 Option 1: We can send the Feathered Hope Box directly to the rescue on your behalf.

🎁 Option 2: We can send the box to you first if you’d like to add a few personal touches, treats, or a handwritten note before sending it on to the rescue yourself.

💚 A little note from my heart:
None of these boxes are profitable for R&M Toys. Every cent goes directly into making the toys and filling the boxes for the birds. This is something incredibly close to my heart, and simply my way of giving back to parrots who need it most.

And because we truly believe in this mission, we are considering making Feathered Hope Boxes an ongoing project — not just for one month 🥹

If there are any rescue organisations you’d love for us to include in future, please tag them below or send us a message 💚

Together, we can bring a little more joy, shredding, chewing and enrichment to parrots who deserve the world 🦜✨

Running a parrot rescue sounds magical until you realise your daily routine includes conducting home checks via WhatsApp while someone pans their camera across a lounge at lightning speed saying, “See? Plenty of space.”

You spend your day recruiting fosters, arranging cages, organising transport routes that look more complicated than international smuggling operations, and trying to match surrendered birds with safe homes before your coffee even gets cold.

Your phone rings:
“Hi, my African Grey escaped.”
“Oh no, where are you based?”
“Limpopo.”
“I’m in the Eastern Cape.”
“So when are you coming to help search?”

Apparently running a rescue also means owning a teleportation device.

Then there are the people knocking on your door in the pouring rain saying:
“I didn’t know where else to go, my bird got out”
Gumboots, raincoat and a 3 year old, here we go. Hope and pray we don't get the flu, heaven forbid, something worse.

You spend hours arranging vet visits for sick birds, answering messages about diet and husbandry, only to be called a fraud, a racist, an idiot, and occasionally all three together because you suggested maybe sunflower seeds alone are not a balanced diet.

Meanwhile someone calls you five times in a row, sends three WhatsApps, a Facebook message, and an email because you didn’t answer immediately. Ma’am, I am currently speaking to a vet, organising transport, feeding my parrots, and trying to remember which one of my five children just shouted “Mooooom.” because, you know, the humans also need assistance with some weird stuff every now and then.

And then there are the sick birds that arrive.
The ones that make your heart sink. Birds so thin you can feel every bone, struggling to breathe, birds who haven’t known a proper diet, sunlight, enrichment, or kindness in years.

And despite the chaos, the heartbreak, the exhaustion, and the occasional public character assassination… tomorrow I will still answer the phone and help the next bird.
