Spring is here, Midlands!

Warmer days, gardens coming back to life, more time outdoors and a little more colour everywhere we look. Spring is a wonderful reminder of just how special our Midlands community is.

As we head into the new season, let’s enjoy our neighbourhoods responsibly, stay aware when we’re out and about, look after our shared spaces, and continue looking out for one another.

Here’s to warmer days, stronger connections and a safe and happy spring for everyone in our community.

Do you know the people who live around you?

Community safety starts long before something goes wrong. Simply knowing your neighbours, recognising the people and vehicles normally in your area, and having a way to communicate can make a real difference.

Introduce yourself. Exchange contact details with neighbours you trust. Join legitimate community communication groups and pay attention to what is happening in your street.

When we know what is normal in our neighbourhood, we're more likely to notice when something isn't.

A simple conversation could help prevent someone you love from becoming a victim.
Scams and distraction tactics keep changing, and older members of our community are sometimes deliberately targeted.
Take a little time to talk to the seniors in your life about staying alert at ATMs and while shopping, recognising suspicious calls or messages, and never sharing PINs, OTPs or banking information with anyone.
Remind them that if something doesn't feel right, it's always okay to walk away, hang up or ask someone they trust for help.
Share the knowledge. Start the conversation. Help keep our seniors safe.

If your vehicle breaks down:
• Pull over safely if possible
• Switch on your hazard lights
• Stay visible to other road users
• Call for assistance from a safe location

That's often all opportunistic criminals need.

When you're shopping, keep your handbag zipped and close to your body, avoid leaving valuables visible in your trolley or vehicle, and stay aware of who's around you. If someone's behaviour doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and move away.

Most shopping trips end without incident, but a few simple habits can make it much harder for criminals to take advantage of a moment's distraction.
