Now that the High Seas Treaty has officially come into force, we will be unpacking some key facts around what it is and what it aims to achieve.
To start off, what are the high seas?
They are international waters of the open ocean as well as the seabed lying beyond the continental shelf of any country.
It encompasses all Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, the seafloor and water column, and is governed by all nations.
It covers almost half the Earth's surface, and makes up 64% of the entire ocean.
