Running a community WhatsApp group is getting harder to manage.

Once usernames roll out fully, residents can hide their phone number behind a handle. Admins currently rely on a recognisable number to work out who is actually in unit 12 and who joined the group uninvited.
A hidden number removes that check.

WhatsApp Plus adds a further split. At R28.99 a month, subscribers pin more chats and unlock extra themes, while everyone else works from the standard version. An admin now manages a group running on two different versions of the same app.

Neither update addresses what actually makes these groups hard to run: unlimited noise, and no way to know who is responding when something happens.

Buzzer starts from a different base. Every resident is verified into their own community, every emergency alert goes through a control room, and visibility doesn't depend on a paid tier. In Hout Bay, that structure is why 13,000+ residents moved onto Buzzer while the area's WhatsApp safety group tops out at around 1,500.

Buzzer is the direct line to the responders you already trust.

Every community on Buzzer has a champion, the person who knocks on doors, chases the admin, and keeps residents talking to each other and their responders.

Often, that person is a woman: a trustee who takes on work nobody else wants, or a mother who pushes for a safety app on her child's campus.

This Women's month, we're recognising the champions who turn neighbours into a community that looks out for itself.

Someone reports a break-in in the community WhatsApp group.
It lands as message 47, underneath 46 messages about missed refuse collection and a lost cat.

No timestamp anyone can point to. No record of who saw it or when. No consent for the personal information sitting in that thread.

This isn't a one-off. It's the daily operating reality for most community WhatsApp groups, because a tool built for chatting gets asked to double as incident reporting, dispatch, and a compliance record. It was never built for that job.

Buzzer replaces the group with one purpose-built channel. Every report timestamped. Every alert routed to someone who can act on it. A record your community can actually stand behind if it's ever needed.

Responders respond. Buzzer coordinates.

Mandela Day asks a simple question every year: what are you doing with your 67 minutes.

The idea behind it is bigger than a single day of service.
A safe, working South Africa gets built by people who show up for each other, not by waiting for someone else to fix it.

That's the same idea Buzzer is built on.

A neighbourhood watch running on WhatsApp, a farm watch relaying alerts by hand, a body corporate chasing down a security company that never answers: all of it is active citizenship without the tools to match the effort.

Buzzer gives that effort a structure.

Residents raise alerts.
Vetted responders get routed to them.
Every incident is logged, so the record matches the work being done.

Responders respond. Buzzer coordinates. Active citizenship is the whole point.

Buzzer logged its first incident report on 14 July 2021. Five years on, the numbers have sky rocketed.

The platform has captured 45,564 self reported incidents. Each one carries a millisecond-precision timestamp, a GPS location and a status, tracked from the moment a resident raises it through acknowledgement and resolution.

12,644 residents in Hout Bay have reported an incident through the app. Suspicious activity, municipal issues, fires, medical emergencies, SOS panics, wildlife encounters. Some of them report once. Many report again and again, across years, because the last report went somewhere.

Volume grew from around 300 incidents a month at launch to a peak near 1,470 a month in April 2024. It has settled since into a steady band of 600 to 900 a month, holding through 2025 and into 2026.
Every incident in that history routes to a responder, and 89% get acknowledged. 87% reach a resolved outcome.

A neighbourhood watch WhatsApp group loses a report in the scroll.

Buzzer keeps it on a record, with a timestamp and an outcome, for five years running.

Buzzer doesn't replace your security company. It sits over it.

On a major incident, the usual failure mode is different radio networks, no shared intelligence, and everyone finding out too late that someone else already responded. "Headless chickens" is how it's been described to us more than once. One guard jumps the fence here, another jumps there, and nobody's coordinating.

ADT, Deep Blue, PPA, SAPS, Metro, fire and rescue. Every one of them can plug into the same Buzzer control room. Communities choose which responders they use. Buzzer doesn't pick a side. It gives everyone a shared, real-time view of who's responding, where, and to what.

Neutrality isn't a missing feature. It's the design choice that lets all of it work together.
