Our rescuers have spent the day spinning round up and down, we have 5 new at the centre.
So now we need to feed and care for them. You called we came, please help us financially so we can buy more fish.
It's now R30,000 for 500 kgs of fish, because fish is scarce. 😭

Thank you to everyone who helped protect the seals on shore too.

I couldn't believe how busy the beach was when I came in to soak up some rays this morning. These humans seem to be all over the show, some gliding in the water too and they are just so inquisitive. They get really close to me and their footsteps and voices make me afraid. Thank goodness some came to help. They put up a sign and kept people and dogs away. It was nice to rest peacefully for a few hours as I don't have any energy and my tummy is rumbling. I heard one lady say that I'm around 6 kgs underweight and need some rehabilitation.
But I was so tired I just drifted off and woke up to a strong man lifting me into a crate. I'm glad to be safely on my way to Hout Bay Seal Rescue as I speak. I'll be fed some yummy sardine smoothies and get the rest I so need.
Please help towards my restorative journey by donating to Hout Bay Seal Rescue.

Say No to Fireworks we are !!

Thank you Captain Calm !

Did you know?
While YOU watch the sky, Cape fur seals are scrambling for their lives.

The Panic: Almost 95% of the harbour’s seals are resting at night. Within minutes of fireworks starting, that flips to 92.7% are thrown into a state of acute panic.

They scramble into the dark water, and some won't return to their resting spots for 24 to 48 hours.

The Stampede: On packed docks, rocks, and steps, the sudden noise triggers a stampede.

Heavily panicked bulls weighing up to 300kg scramble over others, leaving smaller females and defenseless pups trampled and crushed.

The Injuries: Blinding flashes and booming echoes disorient the fleeing animals. As they rush for the water, they crash into boats, chains, and concrete piers.

Injuries and blood in the water, attracting sharks.

🦭 FROM 10.1KG TO FREEDOM 🌊

When this young Cape fur seal was rescued in Blouberg on 17 October, he weighed just 10.1kg - far below the 16–20kg expected for a seal of his age.

At approximately one year old, he should have been growing stronger and learning to thrive in the ocean. Instead, he was dangerously underweight and needed urgent help.

Without intervention, he was unlikely to survive.

Food scarcity can leave young seals struggling to find enough to eat. As they become weaker, catching prey becomes even more difficult, creating a devastating cycle of malnutrition and decline. Overfishing and changes in ocean conditions can put additional pressure on the marine food web 🐟🦑

Thankfully, this little one got a second chance.

Since his rescue, he has received the nutrition, care and time he needed to recover at HBSRC. Slowly but surely, he grew stronger, gaining the weight he desperately needed.

And yesterday weighing a little over 16kg and returned to the ocean where he belongs 💙🦭

He’s been tagged so he can be identified, but his next chapter is his to write. No more rehabilitation. No more recovery. Just open water, the freedom to roam, and the chance to live life wild.

Go well, little one. May the ocean be kind to you 🌊

🚨 Another rescue, another seal in need of help!

It’s been a super busy Saturday for the Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre team, and this is just one of the rescues we’ve carried out today, this time in Muizenberg.

We’re heading into one of our busiest times of the year, and our team is working hard to help seals in need.

If you see a seal that appears injured, weak, or in distress, please reach out to us. If you’re unsure whether a seal needs help, let us know so we can assess the situation.

Your eyes on the ground make a difference. 🦭💙

PS - this rescued seal is now safely back at our Center and will undergo all necessary checks and rehab

🌊 What shall we name him? 🌊

This little one that we rescued on Saturday from Blouberg has been shared far and wide. He's doing well in isolation and being fed 2 or 3 times a day and looking better already.
But he needs a name, so let's see who comes up with a fitting name for this fighter!!!
