4:00 PM UPDATE: Students were released from the school to return home. This investigation remains ongoing as deputies continue working to ensure the safety of students, staff, and the community.

——————-
2:22 PM UPDATE (from YCSD): This is the York County School Division. The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office has concluded their canine search of the high school and middle school. In accordance with protocols, deputies will go room to room at the high school then the middle school to place each room in the SECURE status. This means students and staff are able to turn lights back on and resume activity in the classroom - again once cleared by the Sheriff's Office.

Access to and from the building remains restricted to emergency responders and essential personnel. Students and staff are not permitted to leave the school building. Returning both the high school and middle school to normal operations to begin dismissal will take time. We will share updates regarding dismissal procedures as soon as we are able.

Once again, we ask you not to come to campus until we notify you that the school has resumed normal operations and is able to begin dismissal.

1:47 PM UPDATE: Deputies remain on scene at Grafton High School following a reported potential threat.

The K9 team is currently conducting a search of the campus as the investigation continues.

The school remains on lockdown out of an abundance of caution while deputies work to ensure the safety of students and staff.

We continue to ask the public to avoid the area and allow law enforcement and school officials to safely manage the situation.

Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.
—————-
There is currently a heavy law enforcement presence at Grafton High School due to a reported potential threat of a weapon on school property.

As a precaution, the school has been placed on lockdown while deputies and school officials investigate. At this time, we ask the public to avoid the area and allow emergency personnel to safely manage the situation.

Parents and guardians are encouraged not to respond directly to the school unless instructed to do so by school officials. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation.

The York County School Board has unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Melissa Pettigrew as the division’s new Chief Operations Officer, effective May 1. Dr. Pettigrew joined YCSD in 2025 as the director of Information Technology.

Her previous experience includes leadership roles in Newport News Public Schools, the College of William & Mary, and Virginia’s Community College. Since joining Team YCSD, Dr. Pettigrew has led division-wide initiatives to modernize systems, strengthen cybersecurity, and improve service efficiency.

Pettigrew will be filling the role left by Dr. Jim Carroll, who was named division superintendent in March.

“Dr. Pettigrew has demonstrated outstanding leadership and a strong commitment to supporting our schools in her role as director of Information Technology,” said Carroll. “Her experience, collaborative approach, and deep commitment to doing what’s best for students and staff has already resulted in measurable operational improvements.”

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Christopher Newport University, a Master of Public Administration from Old Dominion University, and a Doctor of Strategic Leadership from Regent University.
