Potomac Pedalers' Harvest Hundred cycling event coming up on September 21st. We are starting and ending at Barrel Oak Winery and there will be three routes (a century, a metric, and a 40-mile spin). So there are going to be great ride options and a really nice venue to hang out at afterwards. Registration includes a good BBQ lunch and participation in a giveaway of wine and bike accessories. Registration can be found at this link: https://potomacpedalers.org/harvest_hundred.

If the registration fee is a barrier to participation, we have a limited number of scholarships thanks to the generosity of Kaiser Permanente. Just email us at [email protected]. Would be great to see a group from Peninsula Bicycling Association out there.

Ever wondered how we can make city streets safer for bikers and pedestrians? Dutch-style protected intersections might be the answer. These intersections slow down cars with corner refuge islands, giving cyclists and pedestrians more visibility. Set-back crossings separate bike and pedestrian paths, reducing collision risks by up to 70%. Dedicated signals provide a safer start for cyclists and walkers. In places like Davis, California, the results are clear: no incidents reported since these intersections were introduced. Implementing such designs may be complex, but they hold the potential to cut traffic fatalities, encouraging more people to walk and bike. Imagine a city where everyone feels safer on the road.

It's often overlooked how cyclists face unique challenges on the road. You have responsibilities like motorists, but it can be tougher amidst the traffic chaos. Riding with traffic, signaling turns, and staying visible are crucial. A simple tip like wearing a helmet can cut head injury risks by half. When it's dark, lights are non-negotiable for visibility. And finding a compromise with drivers: they need to keep a safe passing distance, while you stay vigilant of blind spots. It’s about sharing the road safely. These measures aren't just laws, they're lifesavers, ensuring every cyclist’s journey is safer and more predictable.

As 2023 comes to a close, the PBA is looking to fill two Board vacancies.

We are looking for a Secretary and Membership Director.

PBA Board positions are part-time. We have one formal meeting a month, typically the first Sunday at 7pm, via Zoom. Throughout the year, as events dictate, there may be more than one meeting or activity a month.

The Secretary helps record key topics, motions, actions, etc.
The Membership Director works with the Board and club management software to track memberships, help communicate with existing and potential members about renewing or joining.

If you're interested in a Board position, please contact an existing Board member to discuss.

AFTER THE FOURTH RIDES, JULY 9

All members who register and ride for the annual "After the Fourth" rides this Sunday will receive a club helmet decal and the first 20 who register will also receive a tube of GU hydration tabs. All the rides brief at 1:00 PM, at Tradition Brewing, 700 Thimble Shoals Blvd #100, Newport News. There will be a food truck and live Bluegrass music after the ride, so stay and socialize for a while. There are four paces available, so please register for your ride of choice.

HOT WEATHER AND WIND TIPS

The first tip is from Marci of the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation and one I've used a couple of times already. Freeze small GoGo SqueeZ (or similar) fruit pouches. They are available is several flavors and sizes. With the heat index over 100F, these are candidate for ride stables.
The second tip came from Jennifer at the TRADOC band's 50th birthday party Fort Monroe. The road inside the Casemate has just been resurfaced and all the cracks and potholes repaired. When the surface wind reaches double digits, the walls block it, resulting in a 3/4 mile oval with little traffic in the early evening.

MEMBER CHALLENGE OPEN SEASON - JUNE 30 TO JULY 10

Hopefully the weather will be our ally the during the Fourth of July Open Season, Friday, June 30 to Monday, July 10. Member Challenge Birthday Club rules are suspended during club Open Seasons, meaning any member may complete the challenge regardless of their birthday date see https://pbabicycling.org/Member-Challenges for the details. Members may also complete one of the 50-50 Club rides during an Open Season. I've been asked to explain the rule that says the birthday ride must be completed within 24 hours. Yes, this means you can start the ride one afternoon and finish it the next morning. As an example, you can ride one of the After the Fourth rides on Sunday, July 8 and complete your birthday club qualifier the next morning, just so you finish before the time the After the Fourth rides rolled the day before.
