Honored to celebrate in Yorktown! Great time and great turn out to honor America’s 250th! No better place IOHO 🙂

After the parade we gathered at the Custom House garden and several additional members and pending members signed our own Declaration of Independence to go in the Moore House Society time capsule.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲

On July 8, 1776, the words of the Declaration were read aloud for the first time, carrying the promise of independence into communities across the colonies. 250 years later...50 States, 5 Territories, the District of Columbia, and Minor Outlying Islands of the United States, will be participating in a nationwide commemoration spearheaded by the Hawai'i America250 Commission. We will all be reading the Declaration of Independence at the same time across 9,500 miles.

In Virginia, this reading will be taking place at the Yorktown Victory Monument with a declaration that is open for guests to sign.

Where surrender was sealed….

The terms of surrender for the British army were negotiated at the Moore House in 1781. Today, the house is restored and furnished to reflect its 18th-century appearance, offering a vivid glimpse into the moment that helped shape the end of the Revolutionary War.

And this weekend, you can step inside it yourself! The house is open as part of the Yorktown Sail Fest, alongside special tours and living history events across Historic Yorktown.
