Since our founding in 1981, Westhab has built 1094 affordable housing units, moved 9,149 households from homelessness to affordable housing, placed 8,099 people into employment, and delivered services to over 10,000 homeless and at-risk youth. The Bronx Times recently highlighted the opening of Westhab’s Van Cortlandt Men’s Rapid Rehousing Center in North Riverdale.

The 130-bed facility is now providing safe, temporary housing and supportive services to help individuals stabilize and move toward permanent housing.

Meet Tony.

“I never thought I’d be in a shelter, but when I felt unsafe, I couldn’t afford anywhere else to live.”

Tony is one of the many young people who have entered Westhab’s NYC shelters. With support from his caseworkers, he found permanent housing and began working with Westhab’s employment services to pursue a new career.

Today, Tony works as a facilities manager at Westhab’s Van Cortlandt Rapid Rehousing Center, where he helps maintain a safe and supportive place for men experiencing homelessness.

Shelter is not the end of the story. For Tony, it was a step toward a home, a career, and a new sense of stability.

What does homelessness look like in New York City?

Over the past five years, Westhab has served 26,453 individuals in our NYC homeless shelters. The data gives us a clearer picture of who is experiencing homelessness, what brings people into shelter, and the challenges people face on the path to permanent housing.

What a night! 🥂

The Westhab Junior Board’s annual A Toast to Home brought together friends, supporters, and new faces at City Vineyard for an evening of connection, celebration, and giving.

Together, we raised more than $110,000 to support Westhab families and our work to end homelessness and expand affordable housing and opportunity across New York.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, raised a glass, made a gift, or helped make the evening possible. And a special thank you to our incredible Junior Board for making it all happen!

Last week, we cut the ribbon on Westhab's latest nonprofit-owned development, the Van Cortlandt Rapid Rehousing Center. This new 130-resident facility provides temporary housing and connects residents with employment services, housing assistance, and other supports as they work toward permanent housing.

A project like this doesn’t happen without many people working together. Thank you to our partners at the Department of Homeless Services and Commissioner Erin Dalton for working alongside us to create new solutions to homelessness and help more New Yorkers move toward permanent housing.
