The Ebola crisis continues to spread in West Africa and is out of control in our beloved Liberia. The country is in a state of emergency, schools are closed and most international airlines have cancelled flights. Hospitals are overwhelmed and do not have the capacity to handle the growing number of cases. The number of Ebola cases is doubling every three weeks and the death toll is expected to reach 7,800 by October 12, 2014.
Several members of the international community have gotten involved in combating this epidemic. China stepped up by sending almost $5 million-worth of medical supplies to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. United Kingdom has committed to a $5 million package of support that included partnerships with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders. Cuba is set to send 165 health workers to Sierra Leone, which is the largest contribution of doctors.
Earlier this week, the United Nations held its first emergency meeting on a public health crisis and declared the Ebola outbreak a threat to peace and security. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced that the United Nations will be deploying a new emergency health mission known as United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) with five priorities: stopping the outbreak, treating the infected, ensuring essential services, preserving stability and preventing further outbreaks. This resolution already has the sponsorship of 131 countries- the most sponsors of a resolution to date.
As of Tuesday, the US is ready to take on a leadership role to help combat the Ebola outbreak. President Obama has committed to sending 3,000 troops to help contain the virus and prevent it from spreading across the globe. The US will also be sending 400,000 in home care kits, which include sanitizer and other protective items like gloves to families to help them protect their own safety as they care for sick relatives.
The HELP foundation has pledged to join the continuing efforts of individuals and organizations in the fight against this deadly virus.
