After living with sickle cell disease since infancy, 23-year-old Daniel Cressy is now looking toward a future that once seemed out of reach—including pursuing his dream of becoming a commercial pilot. His story represents a major breakthrough in medical innovation and renewed hope for families affected by sickle cell disease.

Congratulations to CLASI Advocacy Director John Whitelaw on being recognized as one of Delaware's "Most Influential & Inspiring in Law" for 2026 by The News Journal/Delaware Online!

John is a tireless advocate for the fundamental rights and dignity of all Delawareans, and he has impacted thousands of lives through individual case representation and systemic advocacy over his 40-year legal career.

He works with CLASI staff statewide to pursue creative strategies to address legal issues faced by our clients, including people with disabilities, older adults, families facing eviction and housing discrimination, public benefits recipients, and manufactured housing residents.

A national expert in public benefits and Social Security law, John also provides training and support to other legal aid and nonprofit organizations and serves as a trusted mentor to public interest attorneys and advocates across the country.

The Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) in Bentonville, Arkansas, is officially open and has welcomed its inaugural class of 48 medical students. Founded by philanthropist Alice Walton to address systemic gaps in healthcare, the four-year MD program is pioneering a "whole-person" curriculum that integrates conventional medical training with preventive care, nutrition, the arts, and humanistic practices. Designed to serve underserved and rural communities, the 154,000-square-foot facility features a unique campus that blends architecture with nature, offering healing gardens, a rooftop park, and seamless integration with the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art to help students cultivate empathy and observational skills. As part of its commitment to accessibility and the future of healthcare, the school is offering tuition-free education for its first five graduating classes.

While the United States government cuts Medicaid for millions of Americans, Mexico has gone in the complete opposite direction.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has signed a decree creating a universal healthcare system that gives every Mexican citizen free access to care — at any public health institution, for any condition — no matter what insurance they have or whether they have any at all.

No premiums. No networks. No out-of-pocket surprises. No medical debt.

Enrollment is already underway. Starting in 2027, it won't matter which system you're enrolled in — emergency care, cancer treatment, heart attacks, strokes, high-risk pregnancies, vaccines, and basic consultations will all be available anywhere in the public network. Chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension follow in 2028.

For years, Mexico's public health system was a maze. Your coverage depended on where you worked and which institution you were enrolled in — and if you showed up at the wrong hospital, you were out of luck.

The new universal health ID card ends that. One card. Any public facility. Any condition.

Is it going to be easy to pull off? No. The challenges are significant. But while Washington dismantles healthcare at home and defunds it abroad, Mexico is building something.

That's what it looks like when a government actually works for the people who elected it.
