Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins is showing incredible strength in her battle with a serious blood disorder.

The TLC superstar was diagnosed with sickle cell disease as a child. Doctors told her she would not live past 30. Despite the intense pain and challenges, she went on to become one of the most successful singers of her generation.

In a 2025 interview, T-Boz spoke openly about how the condition affected her life and career with TLC. She credits her mother and bandmates for their strong support during the hardest times. Before 911 existed the way it does today,
a medical emergency in a Black neighborhood could mean one thing.

A cop showed up.

Or a mortician.

No treatment.

No CPR.

No IV.

Just a ride.

That changed in 1967 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

A group of Foundational Black American men from the Hill District were recruited to become something that had never existed before.

Trained paramedics.

These men went through 300 hours of training.

They learned to intubate.

They learned to read heart monitors.

They learned to start IVs in the back of a moving vehicle.

One of them was named John Moon.

He became the first paramedic to intubate a patient in the field.

Not in a hospital.

In the field.

That technique is still used today every time a paramedic saves someone's life before they ever reach a hospital.

They called their unit Freedom House Ambulance Service.

And their standards became the model for modern EMS across the entire country.

Most people riding in an ambulance today have no idea who helped build that system.

Now you do.
