We’ve got some bad news, because of the crazy weather this weekend the Fire in the Pines Festival has been canceled for October 10th.

You don’t want to miss the fun this weekend!

For our Second Saturday Cleanup, CFRW and KNHB will bring the gloves, pickers, bags, and safety vests—you bring your passion for clean water, and your Halloween costume! You’ll have to stay tuned for what you might win if you have the best costume👻 If you have waterproof knee boots or waders, please bring them, we will need some folks to walk through the center of the ditch, which typically has standing water.

Fire in the Pines Festival will involve a ton of fun and lots of different organizations from around NHC you can learn about and chat with! Come and see us! 🔥

For this month’s community litter cleanup, we worked on the Smith Creek watershed that runs along the railroad tracks on Princess Place Dr. We were joined by a mighty crew of 35 community members who removed more than 500 lbs. of litter and recycling from the creek!

This week, we’re excited to highlight Keep New Hanover Beautiful as one of our Ocean Friendly Establishments! 🌊

We’re lucky to have organizations like this doing the work to keep our community clean, beautiful, and welcoming for everyone. As an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Keep New Hanover Beautiful works to reduce litter, improve recycling, and bring people together throughout our community.

From local cleanups and their Cigarette Litter Prevention & Recycling Program to beach sweeps with their BeBot, they’re finding creative ways to make a difference right here in New Hanover County.

Just a reminder we’ve got TWO events on Saturday the 10th— the Second Saturday Cleanup with Cape Fear River Watch, and the Fire in the Pines Festival!🔥

The Second Saturday Cleanup will be at 894-1 S Kerr Ave, Wilmington, NC 28403, and the signup link is below! We will focus our efforts on three locations: the drainage easement that runs behind the Crossroads shopping plaza, the southern continuation of that easement that runs behind Jackson's BBQ and the Kerr Ave. artificial wetland, just across the street. We will meet at a central staging location located in the parking lot of Crossroads Center.♻️

We are excited to recognize Hannah Mason, Founder and President of our KNHB Student Chapter at UNC Wilmington and one of the newest members of the Keep New Hanover Beautiful Board of Directors!
Hannah is graduating from UNC Wilmington with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and a concentration in Conservation. Originally from the mountains of North Carolina, her love for the outdoors and natural world began at an early age and inspired her passion for environmental stewardship and community engagement.
Since coming to Wilmington, Hannah has combined her interests in conservation, education, and community service through a variety of hands-on experiences. She currently serves as a Teaching Assistant for Dr. Urbanek’s Wildlife Field Methods and Conservation course and previously worked alongside Dr. Urbanek on a research project studying wildlife movement patterns along Route 64. Hannah has also used her GIS and mapping skills to create a Survey123 geolocator survey and interactive map identifying the locations of KNHB’s cigarette receptacles across New Hanover County, helping support the organization’s litter prevention efforts.
