Congratulation to The Firm!🎓

Yesterday Sokoto House celebrated the graduation of 11 more Community Health Worker-Violence Prevention Professionals (CHW-VPPs) in our first ever…completely online cohort-The Firm. This group joined the team of professionals already deployed into the community and we welcome them in expanding our reach.

This was such a diverse and special group with a vast variety of different experiences and skills. We can’t wait to see them take the CHW-VPP principles back to their own communities and see how they prosper there; using new strategies of addressing social determinants of health, reducing toxic stress and preventing multiple forms of violence.

While we had local representation in this cohort, we also had participants from Western Carolina and as far as California! NC is definitely our largest group of CHW-VPPs, but we also have international CHWs in Georgia, Tennessee, Michigan and now California.

Listening to what led these graduates to the training and hearing them share their “AHA Moments” was uplifting and exciting! We have no doubt they will be successful in their goals of utilizing the program and are here to provide continuous technical assistance and support as needed for them to do that.

The brilliant and remarkable Mahlaynee Cooper, Founder of Speak Ya Peace, Inc and graduate of The Firm CHW-VPP cohort-led the group in creating a beautiful acrostic poem, built on the acronyms of CHW-VPP and it perfectly combined a list of adjectives that described the experience and put it into perspective. With her permission, we’d like to share that poem with you. In the future we hope to share testimonies from the individuals in the group and share how they are utilizing the strategies they learned. We know that you will find inspiration from them as well.

Feel free to use this activity in working with others, particularly our youth, to build on literacy skills and social emotional expression of feelings, encouraging meaningful dialogue.

Many thanks to Mahlaynee Cooper for facilitating this activity and giving us permission to share!

C-Caring, Compassionate, Connection, Cohesion

H-Helpful, Harm-Reduction, Health Equity, Humble, Healer

W-Well-Being, Wisdom/Wise, Willing, Work, Willful

V-Victorious, Vigilant, Valuable, Visionary, Voices

P-Perseverance, Patience, Popular Education, Positivity, Peace, Passion

Congratulations again to The Firm. Go and shine your brilliance and do amazing things!

We keep going…

As we celebrate the mid-point of the current Community Health Worker-Violence Prevention Program (CHW-VPP) in session, we are reminded of how violence impacts our entire city and surrounding counties as well, and how necessary trainings like these are to making our communities safer and healthier.

The current workshops are the first to be offered completely virtual in an effort to reach a base of participants at an even greater distance and where in-person trainings may pose a challenge in being able to attend. It’s been a unique and successful experience and we commend those participants who have made a commitment to joining and learning new strategies for building stronger connections through community.

Key subjects offered in this training are:

⭐️ Public Health
⭐️ Multiple Forms of Violence
⭐️ Structural & Social Determinants of Health
⭐️ Health Equity
⭐️ Community Organizing
⭐️ Community Ecosystems
⭐️ Popular Education
Community Trauma Healing
⭐️ Conflict Resolution and More!

Participants in the CHW-VPP training walk away empowered and equipped with public health upstream thinking and methodology to prevent structural and interpersonal violence.

The CHW-VPP training has quickly gained national attention, being it is a key evidence-based program of the Community-Based Public-Health response to Violence (CPrV) model that is highlighted in the policy that was passed in November 2022 at the 150th anniversary of the American Public Health Association Conference in Boston, “A Strategy to Address Systemic Racism and Violence as Public Health Priorities: Training and Supporting Community Health Workers to Advance Equity and Violence Prevention” .

We look forward to the graduation of another group of CHW-VPPs to join the ranks in helping us respond to the needs in our community in a way that only Community Health Workers can…from within! For additional questions about the CHW-VPP model and trainings, contact Abdullah at (971) 373-2947.
