Sweet Emergency Fund More than 25 years ago, a diagnosis of being HIV-positive meant a person may have a life expectancy of less than five years.

The Sweet Emergency Fund, founded by Dr. Donna Sweet, is a safety net for HIV/AIDS patients to ensure they can afford medical care and expenses living with HIV/AIDS Today, if a person is diagnosed early and diligent with taking their medicines, they may live a relatively healthy life ... at a significant financial cost. HIV and AIDS treatments can cost more than $3,000 per month and many patients

have additional health issues related to the disease that can add on to that amount. People are living much longer, creating an even greater need for the Sweet Emergency Fund. Dr. Sweet and the staff at The University of Kansas School of Medicine–Wichita Midtown Clinic go to great lengths to guarantee that their patients get quality health care, regardless of their ability to pay.

MSSC member Donna Sweet, MD, spoke about HIV/AIDS this week to nursing students at the Ascension Via Christi-Wichita State University School of Nursing. The lecture was coordinated by MSSC and its Physicians Nurses Task Force member Alex Ambuehl, an assistant nursing educator at WSU. The task force seeks to support and encourage nurses and nursing students and strengthen connections with physicians. The City of Wichita is extending efforts to provide heat relief through Sunday, August 16.

Transit will continue offering free rides to cooling stations to allow residents to escape the heat and travel to one of the City’s free public resources, including Wichita Public Libraries, recreation centers or neighborhood resource centers.

Riders can travel to a cooling station by simply boarding a Wichita Transit bus and telling their driver to which location they are traveling. Vouchers will not be required effective today. Buses will pick riders back up at the cooling stations and allow them to exit at any stop along the route. Information on routes may be found at Wichita.gov/transit.
