More than 10 routes. Every Wednesday. And they do it as a family. ❤️🌱

You’ll meet two pretty awesome volunteers in this video, a mother and daughter sharing why they choose to volunteer with ICT Food Rescue.

But we have to give a shoutout to the rest of the family too, because this truly is a family effort!

Together, they help complete more than 10 Plant A Row routes every Wednesday, picking up fresh produce from drop-off locations across our community and delivering it directly to the nonprofit organizations we serve.

Week after week, they show up, give their time, use their own vehicles, and help us keep fresh, locally grown food moving throughout Wichita. We are so incredibly thankful to have their entire family as part of ICT Food Rescue. ❤️

We could tell you why volunteering matters, but we think it’s even better to hear it from the people doing it.

241 pounds of locally grown squash, shared with our community! 🌱❤️

On Saturday, an incredible 241 pounds of squash was donated through the Plant A Row Program at Woodard Mercantile Maize.

With that much fresh produce waiting, our Founder & Executive Director Stephanie made a special trip to Maize, and the wonderful Woodard Mercantile team jumped right in to help get everything loaded.

And because this is Kansas, of course the wind showed up too. 😂💨 But a little Kansas wind wasn’t stopping this pickup!

All 241 pounds were delivered directly to Union Rescue Mission of Wichita, one of 19 nonprofit organizations ICT Food Rescue serves, to be shared with Wichita neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

We love seeing all the pieces come together. A gardener chose to share an incredible harvest, Woodard Mercantile provided a convenient place to donate it, and our team helped get it directly where it could be put to good use. ❤️

That’s a pretty great Saturday if you ask us. 🌱

Okay, but look at these pastries. 😍🥐

These beauties were recovered from Reverie Coffee Roasters last week and delivered straight to The Treehouse.

Reverie has been donating food surplus to ICT Food Rescue almost since the very beginning, and today we have four food recovery routes scheduled with them each week, connecting their surplus with Wichita Fellowship Club, Inc., The Treehouse, City Life Church, and HumanKind Ministries.

Scheduled doesn't mean there will always be food! On each pickup day, one of our volunteers simply gives Reverie a call. If there's surplus available, they head over, pick it up and deliver it directly to the nonprofit. 🚗

That last part matters.

Our nonprofit partners don't have to send a staff member across town to pick up a donation or step away from the work they're already doing. Our volunteers bring the food right to them, so their teams can stay focused on serving their clients.

Some days there's plenty to recover. Some days there's nothing. Either way, the plan is already in place when good food becomes available.

Years of partnership. A simple system. And some seriously good-looking pastries staying in circulation. 🥐❤️

Training new staff meant extra pizza. Tossing it wasn’t the plan. 🍕👏

Little Caesars is already one of ICT Food Rescue’s routine food surplus donors. But this week, they were training new staff, which meant making extra food so their team could learn and potentially having more surplus than usual.

So they gave us a heads up and asked, “Can we add some extra pickups?”

Absolutely.

Over two days, volunteers picked up that additional surplus and delivered it directly to Union Rescue Mission of Wichita and OpenDoor to be shared with Wichita neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

And for other Wichita food businesses, it really can be this simple. Give us about 48 hours’ notice and we can plan a pickup. You don’t have to know for sure that you’ll have surplus! On the scheduled day, a volunteer calls to confirm. If there’s food to recover, they head your way. If there isn’t, no problem.

Planning ahead means good food has somewhere to go if surplus happens. 👏

This is what “I grew too much” can turn into. 🍅🌱

Extra tomatoes. Too many peppers. A garden producing faster than you can eat it.

We’ll help make sure it gets put to good use.

Through ICT Food Rescue’s Plant A Row Program, in partnership with K-State Extension - Sedgwick County Master Gardeners, gardeners can donate their surplus produce at drop-off locations across our community.

Our volunteers then complete 31 Plant A Row routes every week, delivering that fresh produce directly to Bread of Life Wichita, New Life Church & Outreach Center of Wichita, and His Helping Hands.

Okay, Wichita, we have a super easy Friday favor to ask. 💛

Our friends at N & J Cafe are doing something AMAZING. On September 28, they’re giving 100% of the day’s sales at their West Side location to one local nonprofit chosen by the community!

And we’d really, really love for ICT Food Rescue to make that ballot. 🙌

Here’s what makes this one extra fun: N & J Cafe is already part of our food recovery story! Their team donates food surplus to ICT Food Rescue, which we then coordinate directly to local nonprofits serving our neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

130+ food recoveries. ONE week. That’s some serious teamwork! 🙌❤️

These photos show just one of more than 130 food recoveries our staff and incredible team of volunteers coordinated and completed across Wichita last week!

This surplus from Costco was picked up by one of our volunteers and delivered directly to Union Rescue Mission of Wichita, one of the 19 nonprofit organizations we serve.

And then our team did it again. And again. And again. More than 130 times in one week. 🚗💨

That’s a whole lot of good food staying in circulation, and we couldn’t do it without our volunteers showing up day after day.

Wichita, you make food recovery happen. ❤️

We have some wonderful news to share! 🎉❤️

ICT Food Rescue is incredibly grateful to Aroma Coffeehouse for awarding us a $500 Community Mini Grant in support of our Full Plate Project!

This funding will help provide the boxes and packing supplies needed for an upcoming event where volunteers will assemble 250 meal kits for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. It will also help us provide a meal for our volunteers after all of their hard work packing those kits!

Thank you, Aroma Coffeehouse, for investing in our work and helping us bring another Full Plate Project event to life. We are so thankful to have your support! 🫶
