Meet Grecia Nebel, our latest Values Ambassador for Leadership.

With 20+ years supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, she now uses her experience to coach leaders, strengthen teams, and help make Heartspring a better place for students and staff in our Therapeutic School.

If you’re curious what people‑centered leadership really looks like in action, this is a story worth reading.

Step 1: Create real-world vocational training opportunities.

Step 2: Design an accessible point-of-sale system for students with neurodevelopmental differences to select items utilizing picture icons instead of traditional text.

Step 3: Guide them in interacting with others while navigating a system designed to help them succeed.

Step 4: Watch them practice real-world customer service skills and develop greater independence — one interaction at a time.

For more than 13 years, we've had the privilege of serving Ty as a student in our Therapeutic School.

As the (unofficial) mayor of Heartspring, Ty kept a robust calendar of appointments with employees around campus and took his role of checking in on staff very seriously. Granted, he did this while watching Garfield and Christmas movies, but he was consistent in his feedback, telling everyone to "get back to work!"

As he transitions back home, we look back on his incredible progress, like communicating without a communication book, tolerating and eventually requesting hugs, visiting home for the weekend, and going on car rides — his accomplishments are far greater than we could ever fit into his appointment book

Like many of our students, Ty left his mark on Heartspring, and it won't be quite the same without him walking the halls.

May is National Speech‑Language‑Hearing Month and Pediatric Feeding Disorder Month.

We’re grateful for the speech-language pathologists, feeding therapists, and pediatric audiologist at Heartspring who help children communicate, connect, eat safely, and engage more fully with the world around them every day.

Our residential students took the field for Miracle League of Wichita kickball, building skills, connecting with peers, and playing a game designed for everyone to participate.

Experiences like this reflect what’s possible with the right support in place.

Thank you to the staff, families, and community supporters who help our students belong on and off the field.

“We were in a moment of crisis, and Heartspring really saved us. It saved our family, helped our marriage, and gives our other kids a better life.”

In Heartspring's Therapeutic School, Scarlett is surrounded by a team equipped to help her grow, connect, and thrive in ways her family couldn't achieve alone at home.

Today, they see her engaging more, expressing herself, and experiencing a level of consistency and support that has made an incredible impact on their entire family.

We’re grateful to Scarlett’s family for sharing what integrated care can make possible for the children and families we serve.

Luke is known for his love of nature and laid-back personality.

Everyone agrees that we'll miss Luke's laugh the most. It’s contagious, especially when he knows he’s getting away with a little mischief. You try to keep a straight face, but with Luke, you rarely can.

We will miss seeing him perched at the top of a playground slide, playing with his beads, and mingling with staff in his group home, but we're incredibly proud of him graduating from Heartspring, and we know he will continue to bring joy wherever he goes.

We’re grateful to support other organizations strengthening our community by rolling up our sleeves and giving back beyond our campus.

Last week, our Advancement team volunteered Simply Hygiene to help sort, package, and load supplies for local schools and organizations to distribute.

Simply Hygiene currently distributes to over 250 schools and 110 organizations in the South Central Kansas area, providing over 102,000 people access to hygiene essentials each month that aren't covered by government assistance programs.

This opportunity reminds us that Wichita has a wonderful network of non-profits working to make the city a better place for the people who live here, and that we all win with community collaboration.

Last week, 80 clinicians from across Kansas gathered for the 2026 KSKidsMAP Conference at Heartspring, focusing on strengthening care coordination, understanding what happens after referral, and supporting children with neurodevelopmental needs more effectively.

For clinicians, this shared understanding helps inform more confident referral decisions and helps families access services sooner.

We’re grateful to KU School of Medicine-Wichita, Kansas Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, KSKidsMAP, and the many speakers and attendees who contributed their expertise and time.

Bringing disciplines together around shared understanding helps improve coordination, access, and care for families navigating complex healthcare systems.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this important work possible.

Known for his great smile, spirited energy, and great taste (especially when it comes to spicy Cheez‑Its), Alex brought humor and determination to everything he did during his time in Heartspring's Therapeutic School.

We’re grateful for the moments spent learning, laughing, and building skills together, and hope you'll join us in wishing him a very happy graduation! 🎓
