As part of our 40 Stories of Hope in 40 Weeks series, we are sharing Chris's story. Chris was born with Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and began her Spectrios journey as a patient, now you might recognize her as one of our Access Technology Coordinators.

In our time, we have been blessed to be part of so many stories of hope and this year we’re sharing those stories with you! As part of our 40 Stories of Hope in 40 Weeks series, we are sharing Martha's story. Due to challenges from glaucoma and worsening corneal disease, Martha could no longer drive and needed to downsize her home. When she finally began coming to Spectrios, she found the support she needed to regain some of her independence.

Sometimes the simplest adjustment can make a world of difference for someone with low vision. A dual-sided, black and white cutting board is one of those simple adjustments.

Why does it work so well?

Contrast! Meal preparation becomes easier when you use contrast to your advantage. If you cut a white onion on a white cutting board, you will likely have difficulty-and difficulty in the kitchen can be dangerous. But try cutting that same onion on the black side of your cutting board and you will see how the white visually pops against the black.

Because food comes in many colors, having the option to use black or white for whatever you are prepping is key. Plus, the dual-sided board will minimize how many boards you need to have and simplify your cooking tools.

In our time, we have been blessed to be part of so many stories of hope and this year we’re sharing those stories with you! As part of our 40 Stories of Hope in 40 Weeks series, we are sharing Janice’s story. Janices story was written with helpful notes from Janice’s daughter, Laura.

"Janice was a teacher who loved reading. Then she developed macular degeneration. She was seeing an eye doctor, but he wasn’t being honest with her about her sight. He was telling her what she had lost, but he wasn’t telling her what was still possible.

That changed when Janice came to Spectrios. She started off seeing Dr. Park, who was caring but direct about what she could and couldn’t see. She was honest with Janice; She told her she needed to stop and think thing through, differently. She told her she needed to reset her brain."
