DuPage Memorial Post 2164 Illinois VFW honors those who served overseas & supports veterans, active-duty military, and their families through service, community events, and camaraderie. Who We Are & What We Do

From Memorial Day and Veterans Day services around the state, to supporting local youth scholarships, to overseas troop support such as Operation Uplink, we make a difference. As the larges

t organization of combat veterans, the VFW is active on behalf of veterans and their communities. We organize blood drives, lobby our elected officials in support of our nation's veterans, and promise support for returning vets and their families. We participate in many different community service organizations such as Make A Difference Day, National Volunteer Week, Toys for Tots, and March of Dimes. We provide services and support to veterans, their spouses and their families. We act as a VA liaison to assist veterans in tackling a wide range of problems from securing support to acquiring well-deserved military awards. In Illinois, we have four Veterans Homes for the elderly and disabled, some specially equipped to care for Alzheimer patients. We perform graveside funeral service rites to honor the memory of a deceased comrade. We will always be here to ensure the honor and recognition due our veterans, in life and in death.

During our recent Flag Retirement Ceremony, a concerned neighbor noticed smoke coming from behind our post and reached out to our friends at the Fire Department. We completely understand the concern, and we’re grateful to be part of a community where people look out for one another.

What they were seeing was part of a long-standing and respectful tradition: the proper retirement of worn, faded, or damaged American flags.

When a flag is no longer fit to be displayed, it should not simply be thrown away. It is retired in a dignified manner, most commonly by ceremonial burning. Each flag is treated with respect as it is placed into the fire, honoring what it has represented and the service, sacrifice, and ideals it stands for.

At Wheaton VFW Post 2164, we take this responsibility seriously.

Our fire bowl was built for us by a local Eagle Scout, and it allows us to conduct these ceremonies in a controlled and respectful way. Before each retirement, we notify dispatch so emergency services are aware of what is taking place. We also take safety precautions throughout the ceremony, including supervision by one of our post officers, who is also a retired fire inspector.

So, if you ever see smoke rising from behind our post during one of these ceremonies, please know that it might not be an emergency. It may be part of a solemn act of respect.

We were also grateful that members of the Wheaton Fire Department stopped by to say hello after receiving the call. Their professionalism and kindness were deeply appreciated.

Thank you to our neighbors for caring, to our fire department for always being ready, and to everyone who helps us ensure that our nation’s flags receive the honorable retirement they deserve.

If you have an American flag that is worn, faded, or no longer fit to be displayed, you are welcome to bring it to Wheaton VFW Post 2164 and place it in the flag retirement bin in our entryway. That bin was also built for us by a local Eagle Scout, and it helps ensure flags from our community are retired with the dignity and respect they deserve.

This morning Commander Leo, Quartermaster “Big” John, and auxiliary members Katelyn, Shirley, and Ron participated in the Wheaton Memorial Day parade.

Katelyn and Shirley proudly carried our Post and Auxiliary flags with the American Legion Post 76 Color Guard. As incoming Auxiliary President Katelyn also partook in the wreath placement ceremony with the American Legion president.

As everyone gathers with their friends and families today for barbecues, we remind you that today is not a day to celebrate. We honor and remember our service members who lost their lives fighting for our freedoms. Today and every day, we remember their courage and sacrifices. 🇺🇸
