Montessori School of Westminster

Montessori School of Westminster The Montessori School of Westminster is an accredited private school in Carroll County, Maryland. MSW is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax-exempt organization.

Children age 2 through grade 9 learn by exploration in a hands-on environment & time spent outdoors. Since its beginning, the Montessori School of Westminster has been preparing students for further education in both traditional and non-traditional environments. Many students proceed on to the best private schools the Baltimore Washington region has to offer and then on to their chosen advanced ed

ucation opportunity. Many other students transition into the public school system with the self-confidence that only a Montessori educated child can truly appreciate. In nearly all circumstances, a student launched here at the Montessori School of Westminster is a student who continues to seek knowledge through exploration and investigation โ€” now and for the rest of their lives.

Lower Elementary (grades 1, 2, and 3) recently visited SOUTH MOUNTAIN CREAMERY in Middletown, Maryland! It was a great trip with lots of flavor! Who knew home delivery is still alive and well and includes WAY more than just milk! The students had a wonderful visit and learned about milk production. Thank you, SM Creamery!

CHAMPIONS! MSW's team did it! The Battle of the Books is ours! Every year, MSW's Upper Elementary (4, 5 & 6) and Middle School (7 & 8 ) have the option to participate in the Battle of the Books. It's an exciting book-based competition. Students compete in teams to answer questions relating to the content of a number of books. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading while cultivating teamwork, and encouraging good sportsmanship.

Battle of the Books grew out of the Learning Advantage Partnership between Carroll County Public Library and Carroll County Public Schools. Initially including grades 4 and 5 with a number of middle schools competing as well, it has since grown to include local private school and homeschool groups. Students are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of styles and viewpoints. Additionally, the participants develop reading comprehension skills and increase their vocabulary.

This year, MSW competed against 6 other teams. Three were homeschool teams and four teams were from private schools. Each team is given the same 10 books to read. Students on the team typically read 2 to 3 books each and get to know those books really well. At the competition, teams work together to answer questions about the books. Judges review all answers and decide on winning teams based on those answers. There are first-, second-, and third-place prizes. Gretchen Malcolm, MSW Upper Elementary guide (teacher), reports the team was enthusiastic and exuberant this year. "They are all avid readers and have excellent memories for details, a huge bonus in this competition." Seven MSW students were on the team this year. Parents, friends, and other family members came to the competition to cheer on the team. Everyone had fun! --Take a look!
