October is LGBTQ History Month and West Hartford is proud to share West Hartford's share of q***r history researched and documented by the West Hartford Town Historian - Mary Donohue. Thank you Mary for your hard work!

Before it was the Agora Ballroom, the building was home to Finocchio's - an early gay nightclub located in an industrial section of West Hartford. The building was located at 165 Dexter Ave and was demolished in 2009.

"Finocchio’s East Cafe in West Hartford was named after a famous historical San Francisco nightclub that operated as a world-renowned drag venue. In January of 1975, the Connecticut State Liquor Commission shut down a drag performance by Ivan Valentin and the Leading Ladies of New York at Finocchio’s

“First New Year’s Gayla Party.” The commission cited a state law prohibiting entertainment at a liquor establishment where men or women were “cross-dressing."

Valentin brought the case to the University of Connecticut School of Law, who managed to eliminate the ban on “male and female impersonators” just a year later. Valentin went on to perform at several Connecticut venues.

Thank you to Richard Nelson for his extensive research. Find out more here-
