My emotions are high with this one.
Yesterday, we received a walk-in surrender that underscores the urgent need for systemic change. We took in a bird, approximately one year old, that arrived in a state of severe emaciation and lethargy. The previous owners had her since December and never sought veterinary care for the animal. They believed her condition was simply a minor vitamin deficiency. Upon rushing her to our veterinary clinic, she was diagnosed with a severe case of pneumonia and significant fluid in her lungs. While she is currently receiving medication, her prognosis is uncertain, and we are not sure if she will make it.
This situation is a direct result of a system that allows for the mass breeding and uninformed sale of animals without ensuring proper education or oversight. While our intent is not to shame individuals for a lack of knowledge, it is clear that we must do better as a society to protect these vulnerable creatures. The suffering this bird has endured was entirely preventable.
We are calling for a serious evaluation of policies regarding animal sales and breeding to prioritize animal welfare over commercial interests. We must implement stricter regulations to prevent such cases of neglect and medical crisis from occurring in the future.
