Homeless is not worthless. Our PATH homelessness outreach team sees the dignity in each human being living in a park, in a car, or in other areas not fit for habitation. They visit, develop rapport and build trust in order to help our neighbors find stability and care off the streets. If you, your faith community, or service group are interested in helping, our amazon wishlist has many needs for the warmer weather: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3JT9L52R3VZML?ref_=wl_share. Institutional stigma is a quiet, persistent force that shapes people’s lives in ways they often cannot escape. It lives within the policies, practices, and everyday operations of our schools, workplaces, and social systems, embedding discrimination so deeply that it becomes almost invisible.
For those affected, this creates not only barriers to opportunity, but also a sense of being unseen, unheard, and undervalued. In this way, institutional stigma quietly but powerfully reinforces exclusion, making the path to fairness and true inclusion feel distant and difficult to reach.

We are pleased to share that NAMI Southeast Wisconsin has appointed Emily Jonesberg, MSW, LCSW as the new Executive Director beginning June 15, 2026. Emily has served as a program manager at Roger's Behavioral Health since 2021 and has extensive experience in youth mental health both as a therapist and with teen outreach, su***de prevention, and group facilitation. Through her work at Roger's, Emily has been a collaborator of NAMI Southeast Wisconsin, piloting the compassion-resilience toolkit for parents and caregivers. Stigma doesn't just come from other people, it can exist within ourselves. When we tell ourselves that we are a burden to others or that our problems aren't worthy of acknowledgement, we prevent our own healing and recovery. Your struggles are real and important. Don't let shame or self-stigma prevent you from recovery. Untreated illness → more stigma → more shame → less help-seeking → worse outcomes.
