SAMHSA Chief of Staff Dr. Timothy Westlake joined physicians, clinicians, dedicated advocates, Great American Recovery Initiative Executive Director Monty Burks, and Great American Recovery Co-Chair Kathryn Burgum at the White House National Transformation Forum on Addiction as a Chronic Disease.

The forum brought together leaders and experts to discuss the Great American Recovery and efforts to transform and modernize the nation’s approach to prevention, treatment, and long-term recovery support. Discussions highlighted what it means to approach addiction as a chronic disease—including screening and diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, long-term management, recovery support, and a focus on meaningful outcomes. Melissa Minkley, Curriculum Director at Pillows With Wings, has spent the past 30 years helping children and families navigate change, overcome challenges, and face life’s adversities with resilience. She recently co-authored Building Resilience & Strengthening Faith, a Life Skills curriculum developed by Pillows With Wings, a local nonprofit dedicated to creating educational products and programs that promote the spiritual and emotional well-being of children and families.

In a world where children and families face daily obstacles and ongoing uncertainty, Melissa equips families with practical, faith-centered strategies to nurture emotional well-being, build resilience, and strengthen family bonds.
