🌿 Strengthening partnerships for a more sustainable future.

Alfonso Malky, Technical Director for Latin America at Conservation Strategy Fund, and Ana Marietta Colanzi, Executive Director of the National Forest Development Fund, signed a cooperation agreement to advance initiatives that connect conservation, knowledge, and local development.

Through this partnership, both organizations will work together on the Bosque Farmacia project, an initiative that seeks to generate local economic opportunities while conserving forests alongside Indigenous peoples and local communities. 🌱

Together, we continue promoting economic solutions for conservation and for the people who protect our territories.

Can economics save the world’s most biodiverse savanna? 🌍

The Brazilian Cerrado is at a crossroads. With 30 million hectares of native vegetation at risk of legal deforestation, the stakes for our climate and biodiversity couldn’t be higher.

In a published in Ecological Economics, CSF’s Innovation Director Pedro Gasparinetti and his co-authors explore a smarter way forward: Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES).

This research provides a critical look at how we can better design incentives to protect the 30 million hectares of "surplus" native vegetation that could otherwise be legally deforested in the Cerrado, the world's most biodiverse savanna ecosystem.

🤝 The Power of Community: One of the most exciting findings? Landowners are more likely to join conservation programs when they see their peers doing it. Social networks and outreach are just as vital as the financial contract itself.

💡 Smart Incentives: To protect land in high-pressure farming areas, we need to move beyond "one-size-fits-all" payments. By understanding "Adverse Selection," we can design better incentives that reach the areas most at risk.

🛠️ A Full Toolbox: In a soybean frontier, PES works best when paired with other tools—like land acquisition and behavioral outreach.
