Shout Mouse Press is a writing program and publishing house dedicated to amplifying the voices of marginalized youth.

Shout Mouse Press is dedicated to centering and amplifying the voices of marginalized youth (ages 12+) via writing workshops, publication, and public speaking opportunities. The young people we coach are underrepresented--as characters and as creators--within young people’s literature, and their perspectives underheard. Our work provides a platform for them to tell their own stories and, as published authors, to act as leaders and agents of change. In collaboration with community-based partners, we have produced 45 books by 350+ youth who are incarcerated or formerly incacerated, Black, low-income, Latinx, Muslim, immigrants, from other marginalized communities and all the intersections therein from Greater Washington, D.C. These authors change and reclaim the narrative, adding necessary complexity, empathy, and humanity to the stories of marginalized communities — and prove themselves as powerful thought leaders for all. There are currently over 75,000 Shout Mouse books in circulation across the country and around the world.

Last week we were honored to receive a Local Impact Grant from NBC4 Washington and Telemundo 44 Washington DC ! The funds from this grant will support our Beyond Borders series and our graphic novel series in partnership with the National Museum of Women in the Arts National Museum of Women in the Arts .

And we loved having the chance to celebrate with other local nonprofits at the check presentation ceremony! What an incredible group. We’re so excited to share this sneak peek of some of the incredible illustrations Team Art is working on for our upcoming middle grade graphic novel — a book project created in partnership with National Museum of Women in the Arts !

It takes many months and so many different project phases to put a book together. Our staff — and our illustrators — have been hard at work since the workshop with the youth authors of this book wrapped up at the end of the summer.

We can’t wait for you to hold the book in your hands in 2027…but right now, we are delighted to share these early sketches for a behind-the-scenes look at what’s coming. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating stories by Latine youth authors: our Beyond Borders series of bilingual children’s books, and our award-winning bilingual graphic memoir collection, Voces Sin Fronteras: Our Stories Our Truth.

These books were created in partnership with Latin American Youth Center and if you have not read them yet, now is a great time to grab a copy in our bookstore or check them out from your library!!

We spent three weeks this summer with 8 young writers, all girls and gender-expansive youth of color, writing a collaborative graphic novel. We are so grateful to our partner in this project, National Museum of Women in the Arts — and we cannot wait to share this book with the world (it comes out in fall 2027!!).

From inside jokes to museum tours of artwork that connected to gender identity (and also the work of Alma Thomas, who has a special role in the graphic novel) — this workshop was one for the books (pun intended?!). Stay tuned for more updates!!

We had the best time this past Saturday at the Social Justice Curriculum Fair, hosted by Teaching for Change and Social Justice Books ! Youth authors Aniyah (A Day Just for Us) and Nehanda (Stubborn Roots) joined us for tabling. We met some amazing DC-area social justice educators, chatted with incredible folks (swipe for the next caption!) and made new friends and connected with old ones.
