In Venezuela, the start of the new school year is a source of hope and joy for communities still recovering from June's devastating earthquakes.

Some Fe y Alegría schools still need to be repaired or even rebuilt, but classrooms across the country are welcoming students back — and our partner Fe y Alegría Venezuela shared a message worth passing along in full:

"As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, our primary goal is to provide our students with a safe space—a place where empathy replaces the worries of the outside world, where solidarity is a daily reality, and where each person's well-being is everyone's priority.

In Venezuela, taking care of one another is the seed of true social reconstruction.
Welcome to this school year, where school is—and will continue to be—a refuge for growth, dreams, and unconditional support."

We're proud to stand with Fe y Alegría Venezuela as this new school year begins. We also remain committed to accompanying communities in need until every student is back in the classroom.

American Jesuits International mourns the passing of Fr. Pete Henriot, S.J., who died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the age of 90.

After entering the Society of Jesus in 1956, Fr. Pete spent nearly seven decades in the service of justice and education — directing the Center of Concern in Washington, D.C., and leading the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection in Lusaka, Zambia, beginning in 1990.

Following his time in Zambia, Fr. Pete brought that same vision to Malawi, establishing Loyola Jesuit Secondary School (LJSS). As Development Director, he worked tirelessly to expand the school's programs, and LJSS is now one of the country's highest-ranked schools, transforming the lives of its students to this day.

For the past several years, we've had the privilege of working alongside Fr. Pete in fundraising and supporting the education and formation of youth at LJSS. It has been an honor to learn from such an incredible Jesuit, and we remain committed to his vision for transformative education in Malawi.

We extend our deepest condolences to Fr. Pete's family, friends, and the Society of Jesus, and we invite you to share your own memories of him in the comments below.

Nepal Jesuit Social Institute (NJSI)–Fe y Alegría Nepal, our partners who are responding to the devastating floods in the region, have experience responding to natural disasters and accompanying the communities impacted long after the immediate aftermath. After significant earthquakes in 2015, a decade of Jesuit solidarity helped turn their initial emergency response efforts into a growing rural education program. Before the earthquakes, NJSI was promoting education in rural communities. The influx of support they received helped supply school kits, textbooks, whiteboards, and classroom furniture and eventually lead to their inclusion as an emerging member of Fe y Alegría.

Faced with a new disaster, that experience matters.

None of NJSI–Fe y Alegría Nepal's own school buildings were destroyed in this month's flooding, but landslides have cut off road access to several of them, and families connected to these schools — including relatives of school principals and at least one recent graduate — are among those still missing.

Across Nepal, as many as 69 schools have been destroyed or damaged and nearly 19,000 children affected, numbers NJSI–Fe y Alegría Nepal says reflect "the scale of the education emergency" now facing its own schools. NJSI–Fe y Alegría Nepal is now on the front lines of a crisis it's uniquely positioned to answer: these are communities it already knows, and that already know it.

The floods that tore through central Nepal on August 26 have grown into one of the deadliest disasters the region has faced: hundreds of the missing are now confirmed dead and more than 2,400 people are still unaccounted for.

Dozens of schools have been destroyed or damaged nationwide — affecting an estimated 19,000 children. In Dhading District, landslides have cut off road access to several schools, including Kalidevi and Dongdendevi.

Our partners at the Nepal Jesuit Social Institute (NJSI)–Fe y Alegría Nepal have sent field assessment teams to the hardest-hit areas, working alongside the Jesuit partners and the communities they support to accompany displaced individuals and families and identify what's needed most.

On Wednesday, August 26, a glacier collapse in the Himalayas caused a wall of water to rush down a valley in central Nepal, tearing through communities in the Rasuwa district near the Tibet border. Search-and-rescue operations are underway across the hardest-hit districts — Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading. While the full extent of the destruction is still being assessed, hundreds of people remain missing.

Our partners at Fe y Alegría Nepal, one of the newest members of the Fe y Alegría international movement, have schools in the region. We are working with our partners — including Jesuit institutions in Nepal and the Xavier Network — to evaluate the situation and better understand the impact on schools and the communities they serve in the Dhading region.

While we wait for more information, we join in prayer for those who have lost their lives, the communities devastated by this disaster, and those who are rushing to provide aid.

This week, Asunción Taboada shared a new reflection from her time in Caraballeda, Venezuela which she visited after the earthquakes that struck the region in June.

In it, she describes watching a man quietly cleaning a rug inside a building the earthquake left standing but broken: a small gesture, and the starting point for a bigger question about what humanitarian work is really for.

"Humanitarian action," she writes, "is 'the set of interventions aimed at saving lives, alleviating suffering, and protecting the dignity of people affected by crises.'" She wrote this traveling alongside the Xavier Network's response teams in Venezuela.
