Ground zero - 12 September 2001

06/08/2026

The Twin Towers (1 and 2 World Trade Center) were the iconic 110-story centerpieces of the original World Trade Center complex in New York City, destroyed during the September 11 terrorist attacks.

7 World Trade Center (WTC 7) is a prominent skyscraper located in Lower Manhattan, New York City, which was completely rebuilt in 2006 after the original structure was destroyed during the September 11 attacks. The original building was a 47-story office tower completed in 1987 . Debris from the collapse of the Twin Towers inflicted heavy structural damage and ignited fires on multiple floors. Uncontrolled fires burned for nearly seven hours before the building collapsed at 5:20 PM on September 11, 2001.Historical Significance: It became the first tall building known to have collapsed primarily due to uncontrolled fires. There were no casualties in WTC 7, as the building was successfully evacuated hours before it fell.

South Tower collapse moment - 11 September 2001

The South Tower of the World Trade Center (2 World Trade Center) collapsed at 9:59 a.m. on September 11, 2001, just 56 minutes after it was struck by United Airlines Flight 175. The aircraft struck the southern facade between the 77th and 85th floors. Intense jet-fuel fires and structural impact damage weakened the steel trusses, leading to a progressive collapse of the upper floors in roughly 10 seconds.

After the north tower collapsed - 11 September 2001

The North Tower (1 World Trade Center) collapsed at 10:28 a.m. EDT on September 11, 2001, after enduring 102 minutes of intense, jet fuel-ignited fires. The structural failure was triggered by the impact of American Airlines Flight 11, which stripped fireproofing from the steel trusses.

102 minutes after the initial plane strike. The collapse claimed the lives of all civilians and first responders in and immediately surrounding the impact zone. The destruction created an immense debris field across Lower Manhattan, ultimately prompting a comprehensive federal investigation into skyscraper fire safety and architectural engineering by the National Institute of Standards and Technology
