Offering permanent housing with supportive services for women and families experiencing homeless.

For New York's women who are experiencing homelessness, there's almost nowhere to turn for help. HousingPlus provides these under-served women with keys to build lives of their own: We provide housing so they can create real homes, address the traumatic events that may have led to their homelessness, and offer employment services that help them get jobs. This uniquely holistic approach empowers women to achieve personal and financial security for themselves and their families.

Art is an act of creation - and an act of - art says “I am here. I am me. I leave my mark.” The inimitable Ann Rosen helps women at HousingPlus express themselves through art, along with Alice Braziller, who provides guidance so they can write their own stories. Most recently, Ann and Alice led tenants in a Zine Making workshop. Each zine had a theme focused on the individual who created it.

A warm and kind welcome was waiting for us at Old First Brooklyn last weekend. The congregation listened to a short presentation from Karen Ford, CEO of HousingPlus, and engaged with Karen in an active Q&A about how community members can advocate for and assist individuals impacted by homelessness. Old First has consistently shown its commitment to giving back to Brooklyn, including by providing dozens of backpacks for children living in HousingPlus apartments this fall!

Today is . Did you know that of the over 30,000 supportive housing units in New York City, more than half are dedicated to providing an option for individuals with serious mental illnesses? Our neighbors living with a serious mental illness are at higher risk for experiencing homelessness; supportive housing provides stability for those impacted.

To close Rikers Island, New York City must reduce the number of individuals being sent to this disgraced facility. On October 2, HousingPlus staff joined Freedom Agenda for a Court Watch session to observe criminal court proceedings and bail negotiations. We must apply constant pressure to ensure that Rikers Island shuts its doors forever. Our presence says, "New York is watching."

Last week, Homeless Services United (HSU)celebrated its Legacy in Action Gala. Honorees included George Nashak of Care For the Homeless and Steve Rockman of Community Care Consultants LLC. HousingPlus was happy to be in the room with these legends. The event also honored the late Fred Shack (Urban Pathways). Deputy Mayor Helen Arteaga and NYC Department of Homeless Services Administrator Reesa Henderson emceed portions of the event.
