For New York's women who are experiencing homelessness, there's almost nowhere to turn for help. HousingPlus provides these under-served women with keys to build lives of their own: We provide housing so they can create real homes, address the traumatic events that may have led to their homelessness, and offer employment services that help them get jobs. This uniquely holistic approach empowers women to achieve personal and financial security for themselves and their families.

Today is ! Let’s take a moment to celebrate the beautiful stories of individuals transformed by supportive housing:

Sierra is a Veteran of the Army who says she was forced to move around many times after her service. Today, she feels the impact of stability in her life. She recently spoke at an event for HousingPlus Veteran tenants and shared her story of what home means to her.

Luz was impacted by detention at Rikers Island for a charge that was eventually dropped. Today, she is raising her baby son in her apartment at one of HousingPlus’ newest buildings. She has made a wonderful environment to raise her child and looks forward to her future.

Our tenants and staff members gathered this week for a Tenant Community Meeting. Hearing feedback from tenants is so valuable - it is an opportunity to ensure that voices are heard. To add to the feeling of community, our staff prepared fresh fruit smoothies for all in attendance. These are the types of events that make us a stronger group.

Delighted to share some of the words of Housing Specialist Malik Barr, who is fundamental in ensuring that women exiting their time in the justice system find stable housing. Malik spoke at an event with FPWA on Tuesday, in good company with individuals like the Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services, Helen Arteaga, and former mayor of Philadelphia, Michael Nutter. We are so proud!

Today, we would like to celebrate Teg Sethi, a leader in building thoughtful, conscious housing projects throughout New York City, and we're proud to say, a member of the HousingPlus Board.

Teg is the owner of Spatial Equity Co., a community developer focused on building affordable housing, retail spaces, and community facilities in underserved NYC neighborhoods. Teg started Spatial Equity as an extension of the work his family had been doing for decades in the real estate industry. He has been instrumental in helping to bring to life several affordable and supportive housing developments, including 365 Shepherd.

As a Board Member, Teg has brought expertise in real estate, finance, property development and management, and public-private partnerships. His dedication to our work is incredible. We are so grateful for him.

Recently, HousingPlus CEO Karen Ford joined other women-led organizations in a collaborative meeting with DOC Commissioner Stanley Richards. As women-led, women-supporting organizations, the conversation centered around reducing the population of women detained at Rikers as well as women impacted by mental illness. The group also had the opportunity to learn more about the DOC's priorities. Commissioner Richards and his team were incredibly welcoming. We are excited for the conversations and actions ahead of us in this effort.

Congratulations, Innocents! Innocents is the son of one of our permanent supportive housing tenants, and he and his twin brother Brian (not pictured) both graduated from high school this year. We are so excited to honor both of these young men for their academic achievements. Thanks to the stability of their home with HousingPlus and the consistent guidance of their mom, Innocents and his brother are now both proud graduates of NYC Public Schools.

This year at The Supportive Housing Network of New York Annual Conference, HousingPlus staff were excited to gather for a day of learning, networking, and even a little fun as they watched a live stream of the Knicks victory parade. It is always inspiring to learn about sister organizations in this work. The day's events included powerful presentations from tenants whose lives have been changed by supportive housing and were capped with a keynote by the National Coalition for the Homeless CEO, Donald Whitehead.

What can policymakers do to prevent and alleviate youth homelessness? HousingPlus CEO, Karen Ford, spoke on a panel to suggest ways to address homelessness among children, adolescents, and young adults. Karen Ford joined Moderator Dr. Lisette Nieves from the Fund for the City of New York last week, along with panelists Joe Westmacott of Safe Horizon, Nadia Swanson of the Ali Forney Center, Jamie Powlovich of the Coalition for the Homeless, Inc., and Rose Torcel of Rising Ground for the conversation. We are always happy to join alongside others to envision paths to better policy.

Several former correctional facilities will be transferred under the management of the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), and Karen Ford, CEO of HousingPlus stood alongside the NYC DCAS, DOC Commissioner Stanley Richards, and leaders from Fortune Society, Hour Children, and others to mark this occasion.

NYC DCAS will be able to explore new uses for the portions of Rikers Island, including North Infirmary Command. This is one step on the road towards full closure of the Rikers Island Correctional Facilities. We look forward to the day when we can see Rikers fully closed, but this is one way to get closer.
