White canes are invaluable tools that empower many individuals with vision loss by helping them navigate safely and independently. This day is often celebrated with community outreach events. For this week's post, we're highlighting a digital resource called Aira. People with vision loss can connect remotely with a trained visual interpreter through the Aira Explorer app on their mobile phones. These interpreting professionals can help with navigation, technology troubleshooting, and other vision-based tasks by describing what they see through your phone's camera. Aira is a paid platform where users purchase service minutes. Subscriptions start at $26/month. Click the link below to find out more!

Aira breaks down accessibility barriers with on-demand video remote interpreting for both the blind and low-vision community, and the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

IN-SIGHT is starting a series, where we share tools each week that can help people navigate vision loss while maintaining independence. Today, we are featuring low-vision notepads and pens. These notepads are perfect for taking notes or writing shopping lists in large print, and the Bravo! Marker Pen ensures that your handwriting is bold and easy to read. Both items can be purchased at IN-SIGHT’s Outlook Shop at 43 Jefferson Blvd in Warwick. We’re open on Mondays through Fridays from 8am-4pm. No appointment is necessary!

Did you know that October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month? When IN-SIGHT was first founded over a century ago, a core tenet of our mission was to empower people with vision loss by providing stable, dignified employment. In 1926, we opened a shop on Broad Street in Providence where those with low/no vision could train and work as chair caners – a service we provided to the public for almost a century, until 2019.
