Day 2 of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.🎗️
Officer Jen’s Why?
I started The Hero Package Foundation in honor of my very first little hero, Emerson Lucier. I first met Emerson in 2018. She was just three years old and courageously battling acute myeloid leukemia for the third time. At the time, I was a police officer in the city where Emerson was receiving treatment. During my shift on Thanksgiving, I delivered a care package to her—and what I thought would be one small act of kindness quickly became something that would change the entire course of my life.
A friendship blossomed almost immediately. That year, you could often find me in my full police uniform, spending my lunch breaks at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, sitting beside Emerson and her family.
I watched this little girl endure things no child should ever have to endure. I watched her undergo a second bone marrow transplant, unexpected hospital stays, severe rashes, and countless symptoms and complications that seemed to change by the day. Yet, through every difficult moment, Emerson continued to show a strength and courage that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
I stayed by Emerson and her family’s side so often that, somewhere along the way, I stopped being Officer Jen and became family. Today, I am incredibly grateful to tell you that my hero, my inspiration, and one of my very best friends, Emerson, is now 10 years old and cancer-free. 💛
Emerson will always be the little warrior who gave me a reason to begin.
What started with one hero and one reason has now grown into more than 250 heroes—and more than 250 reasons to continue bringing support, hope, and joy to children courageously battling cancer through The Hero Package Foundation.
Behind every diagnosis is a child, a family, and a story that deserves to be heard. My mission is simple: No Childhood Cancer Family will ever fight alone. We will continue to fight together until no child has to hear the words, “You have cancer.”
And it all started with one little girl, one care package, and one Thanksgiving shift that changed my life forever.
This is my why. And this is why I keep fighting.✨
To Emerson & all my little heroes: I love you endlessly. This is for you.🫶
