Here's a summary of Jane’s hive inspections led by Ken. In addition to Ken & Jane also in attendance was Bruce, April & Claire. (2 hives).
Hortons Lane, Southold.

Jane’s Notes:
Went over gentle technique of prying apart the supers/brood boxes- so as to avoid killing queen/bees inset Ing hive tool btw boxes giving it a strong tap to separate frames from those above lifting the upper one a crack to make sure no frames are stuck and the. A slight twist and then can lift off
(Ok it's simpler than my description)
We did some frame manipulation in Hive 2 - essentially combining my 2 brood boxes into one.empty frames removed. There were many frames with just pollen and I left them out for the bees to gather.
In both hives the queens had moved down into the lower brood box. Last week she hadn't.
We found evidence of varroa in Hive 2. Some mites and capped brood that had perforated caps
I opted to treat both hives with Formic pro.
I have not done any fall feeding. Both hives were slightly light on sealed honey. I'm deciding on whether to feed or not. I do put 8lbs of sugar on each hive-
A fabulous learning experience on a gorgeous afternoon!
Thanks
