Our Volunteer of the Year from last year, Ashley Van Pelt is also in our New Farmer Incubator Program and is starting to bring in some beautiful harvest of cut flowers with her cutest intern Charlotte!

The good folks at Happy Vibes Farm took advantage of the Education Farm's Beginning Farmer courses and 3 years in our New Farmer Incubator Program. We are very grateful to see the success they are having, they worked very hard to get there. And now Swathi is even serving our the Education Farm Board of Directors.

Last week we spent a day at Happy Vibes Farm in Broad Run learning about traditional crops from India that can be grown in Virginia like Malabar spinach, moringa, bajji chilli peppers and much more! Join us for the next episode on June 30th at 8pm on VPM and streaming here on FB!

We are very close to being flooded with tomatoes, and that's a wonderful problem to face! Next week we are asking for volunteers on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 8AM. Monday we are going to try to beat the rain and do a quick harvest. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings we'll continue planting watermelons and hopefully get some peppers planted too. And Thursday will be our regular harvest. We hope you can join us!

Virginia Experiencing Driest Period Recorded Since 1941

Governor Spanberger Encourages Commonsense Water Conservation in Response to Historic Drought Conditions

Richmond, VA, June 18 - In response to the historic drought conditions creating challenges for communities and farmers across Virginia, Governor Spanberger today — in coordination with the Virginia Drought Monitoring Task Force — encouraged Virginians to take voluntary, commonsense steps to conserve water use. Despite much of the state receiving recent beneficial rain, a significant lack of precipitation has resulted in Virginia recording its driest period since 1941. Precipitation totals are approximately eight inches below average across much of the Commonwealth.

We had several different families show up on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, to help us plant 800 tomato plants and 720 watermelon plants. And to put in miles of very important irrigation lines. We've still got a lot more watermelons to get planted next week, plus another 400 pepper plants. It takes a lot of work to help feed thousands of local families, but our outstanding volunteers are always ready to do their part!

It was a beautiful morning on the farm with some very welcome clouds. We picked 535 lbs squash, kolhrabi, cucumbers, broccoli and kale. This brings our donation total up to 11,310 lbs so far.

A big thank you to everyone who participated in the Fauquier Education Farm 5K/Fun Run this past Saturday, June 13. We had 65 participants ranging from 4 to 65 years old! Check out the link below for photos from the event.

We only had one family volunteer this morning but they were our exceptional Supervolunteers, Kira, River and Reef so we got everything finished in no time at all. We harvested 698 lbs of squash, kolhrabi, cucumbers and kale. This brings our season donation total up to 10,775 lbs.

We're here at the farm early to get ready for the big 5K run this morning. But we couldn't resist taking a picture of the newly planted cut flower demonstration. It can be difficult to get young seedlings to survive the intense heat we've been having, but those intense thunderstorms the past 2 evenings have given us an inch of rain. So it's looking like these little babies are going to be just fine!

On August 8th we will be hosting a Family Farm Festival at the Education Farm and our Board of Directors has decided to ask our volunteers and former students to plan for a festival to showcase the farm and invite the whole community to learn more about what makes the farm so special. So we would like to organize a meeting of any of our volunteers or former students who might like to become involved. We'll be ordering in pizza for lunch at noon on Tuesday the 16th, at the farm. If you’ve ever volunteered or taken classes over the years you are welcome to join. Help us show the whole community how special it is to be a part of our Farmily! [email protected]
