⚠️ Verizon wants to abandon landlines, aka plain old telephone service, in several Piedmont counties, including Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Rappahannock. This would literally cut off an essential life line for thousands of people living in rural areas who don’t have access to broadband or cell service. Even for people who do have broadband and cell service, many still use landlines for important purposes, including calling for help in emergencies and during power outages.

If this impacts you, tell the FCC you oppose the elimination of landlines by Verizon. Submit comments by Thursday, Sept. 10 on the FCC’s electronic comment filing system, or you can mail or hand deliver your comments.

To file electronically:
1. Go to https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/express
2. Enter the proceedings number: 26-227. Select the case from the drop-down.
3. Enter your name, email address and contact information in the designated fields.
4. Type or paste in your comment in the box and follow the prompts to review your comment and submit.
5. You're done!

✍️ Include in your comment how the discontinuation of landline service would directly impact you, as well as the lack of alternative service in your area, if applicable.

Gigaland, the proposed Fauquier County, Va data center that would’ve used as much energy as the entire state of Vermont, has been withdrawn 🎉

This is a huge win!

This 200-acre project, adjacent to another 230-acre data center campus, would have created 3.5 million square feet of contiguous data center space and infrastructure while destroying rare habitat, historic natural and cultural resources, and residents’ quality of life with noise, light and air pollution impacts.

Our work is not over.

Re*****on Innovation Campus is waiting in the wings.

Join PEC for our next through the Roundabout Meadows pastures and meadows on Thursday, Sept. 24 from 4 - 5:30 p.m. in Aldie 🐦

Birds are an integral part of our ecosystems and help maintain the dynamic balance of nature. On this leisurely 1-mile walk, you’ll learn more about birds and get the chance to spot some of the many species that breed in the Virginia Piedmont, potentially including eastern meadowlarks, field sparrows, indigo buntings and a variety of other grassland and shrubland birds.

Be sure to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for longer grass and uneven terrain. And bring binoculars if you have them.

Register now at pecva.org/events

☝️ The walk is free, but registration is required. We hope to see you there!

Some data centers in slipped through the wire when the county ended its long-standing, and very permissive, by-right data center development last year.

These data centers, which total over 18 million square feet of space, were “grandfathered in” under a special exemption called Data Center Grandfathering Resolution.

🤞Now, there’s a chance to retire this exemption & require them to go through a public process.

Write to the Board of Supervisors at [email protected] before the meeting Tuesday, Sept. 1 @ 4 p.m. in Leesburg to urge them to do so.

A lot has changed in the last year. The public and elected officials need to have a say in what’s built in their communities as impacts hit even closer to home.

The Piedmont Environmental Council's latest Orange County Alert:

We urge Orange County to:
✅ Issue a temporary pause on consideration of any new data center application until the state has a plan in place (Pause to Plan).
✅ Approve draft changes to the comprehensive plan language, but not before removing references to harmful on-site power generation, which will become more and frequent.

➡️ Board of Supervisors Public Hearing Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. We’ll be paying attention to the important Agricultural Zoning District changes too
