How do I start the process of adopting a CANTER horse?

1. First, take the time to make sure you understand the needs and requirements of an ex-racehorse. These horses are NOT for beginners! Although extremely intelligent, they need professional retraining. An experienced horse person or equine vet may offer advice and assist you in selecting a thoroughbred at the track.

CANTER Kentucky is participating in Churchill Downs’ Gallop For Good, a national online giving campaign supporting Thoroughbred aftercare nonprofits, centered around a one-day giving event on June 27.

NEW ARRIVAL: ENCELADUS!

Nicknamed "Nash" (given to him since his sire is Nashville) has just arrived at the farm after being donated to us by his breeder Welbourne Stud who thought he'd make a great sport horse.

While he's only 2, he is a very sweet and willing boy. He will be with us for a bit as we help him decide what he wants to do next. He will be listed on the CANTER website when he's available for adoption.

A grandson of Speightstown, "Nash" is out of the Temple City mare Temple Moon, herself a half sister to graded stakes winner Classy Class. In keeping with the celestial theme of his dam's name, his breeder gave him his registered name of Enceladus as it is one of Saturn's moons. He is in**ed 4x5 to Mr. Prospector and 4x5 to Danzig on the dam's side.

On Wednesdays we wear feed bags. 💁‍♀️

Liftoff Equestrian assistant trainer Alison Kropf is wearing Hallway Feeds’ Equibility. This durable, lightweight bag once contained some of Hallway's quality nutrition, but now its empty shell is recycled into fashion with a purpose. The crinkling bag provides some extra stimulation during a desensitizing session with Stonks.

Stonks isn't available for adoption just yet as he's still figuring out what he wants to be when he grows up. We'll make an announcement when he's available.

We're here to help your retiring racehorse find a soft place to land! If you have a horse that's about to retire, contact us at [email protected] and tell us about them.

Our farm is located in Versailles, KY and our horses are part of a professional training program to help get them started on new careers. While donations are welcomed to help us with the daily care and training, they are not required to donate a horse to us.

Due to some hardware from a previous injury in his right front leg, we recommend a pasture pal or liberty training home for Louie. Never raced, this sweet gelding has been with us since December and has done well with light desensitizing work. He’s also been spending some time in the field with friends (near cows, goats, and pigs) and does well in the group. By Tapit, he is a full brother to Godolphin’s champion Essential Quality.
