How do I start the process of adopting a CANTER horse?

1. First, take the time to make sure you understand the needs and requirements of an ex-racehorse. These horses are NOT for beginners! Although extremely intelligent, they need professional retraining. An experienced horse person or equine vet may offer advice and assist you in selecting a thoroughbred at the track.
2. Understand the two kinds of horses we have available. Canter Owned and Trainer Listings. To start the process of applying for adoption, please visit here. https://www.canterusa.org/support/

Work it, Louie! 🤩

Due to some hardware from a previous injury in his right front leg, we recommend a pasture pal or liberty training home for Louie. Never raced, this sweet gelding has been with us since December and has done well with light desensitizing work. He’s also been spending some time in the field with friends (near cows, goats, and pigs) and does well in the group. By Tapit, he is a full brother to Godolphin’s champion Essential Quality.

Now available for adoption as a pasture pal: Elusive Prize 💙🐴

Never raced, this sweet gelding joined us in December 2025. “Louie” has been a very good boy during some desensitizing work. He has also been spending some time in the field with friends (and near cows, goats, pigs—he’s seen it all!) and is doing well in the group.

Due to some hardware from a previous injury in his front right leg, we recommend a pasture companion or liberty training home for “Louie.”

By three-time champion sire Tapit and out of G3-placed Delightful Quality (Elusive Quality). He is a full brother to champion and MG1W Essential Quality and is a half brother to stakes winner Famed (Uncle Mo). His second dam is the unraced Contrive (Storm Cat), herself a producer of champion and MG1W Folklore. In**ed 4x4 to Mr. Prospector and Fappiano.
