News You Can Use: Winter Safety for Community Cats.
Weβre expecting some rough winter weather this weekend, and itβs important to ensure that community cats are able to stay as safe and warm as possible! βοΈ
- Insulated shelters are always a good idea! DIY shelters can be constructed with large styrofoam coolers or plastic storage totes. Ensure to use straw, not hay, for insulation. Check out the tutorial we posted in November!
- Cats burn more calories in winter as itβs harder for them to maintain their body temperature. You can help by providing extra food - kitten food is particularly calorie dense, and wet food is easier for cats to digest. Serve food in plastic, rather than metal, containers.
- Ensure their water source doesnβt freeze! You can help prevent this by purchasing a heated electric water bowl, placing a microwaveable heating pad under the bowl, or placing the bowl in a sunny area.
- Exercise caution around antifreeze, rock salt, and most commercial de-icing products, as these are toxic to pets. Use only labeled pet safe de-icing products!
- Check your car before driving. Cats may hide under the hood or around tires for warmth. Give a few taps on the hood before starting your car!
We hope everyone (kitties included, of course) stays safe and warm this weekend! πΎ
