Woodford Habitat continues to look for land on which to build its next affordable house, for a family to purchase interest free. In the meantime some Habitat volunteers on other projects like this ramp for a family.

TO: Supporters of Woodford Habitat

All supporters of Habitat for Humanity should remember that Habitat supports the goal of decent housing for all in many countries around the world. Woodford Habitat makes an annual donation to the international work of Habitat. Generally, we send 10% of contributions we receive to work in other countries. In recent years, the Woodford Habitat Board has designated that our donation to go to work in Uganda. This year the Woodford Habitat Board decided to go with a more general donation to the Habitat Global Mission Fund. A check for $2,000 will be sent shortly.

Looking thru the Habitat International website, I found an interesting photo of a British group volunteering to build homes in Malawi. The photo is below.

A couple of interesting notes.

There has been no Habitat activity in Franklin County for many years. Kentucky Habitat is trying to change that and Lexington Habitat has agreed to expand its operations to include Frankfort and Franklin County.

We were pleased that both Mary Shearer, Executive Director of Kentucky Habitat and Lyle Hannah, the Board chair visited our build on Douglas Ave. KY Habitat recently participated in an interesting meeting at the Capitol in Frankfort. There are a couple of bills in the current General Assembly session that would increase funding for the Kentucky Affordable Housing Trust Fund. That fund has helped KY Habitat’s work particularly in the tornado disaster areas of Western Ky. Another proposal would make it a bit easier for a church to convert some of its property to affordable housing.

It seems unlikely that these developments would have much impact on Woodford Habitat but you never know.

With Belinda and family securely in their new home on Douglas Avenue, the attention of the Board obviously turns to future projects. That can be a frustrating process, as several prospects have turned in to deadends because potential sellers decided not to pursue any Habitat proposal. We are diligently pursuing a couple of other possibilities. We hope something can be worked out and we will be able to start on a build this summer or fall but there are no guarantees.

We did have some good news on the fundraising front. Greg Dotson at Woodford Feed runs an annual Christmas lottery. Customers buy tickets and the winner gets to designate various non profits to receive the raffle proceeds. Michael Duckworth was this year’s winner and selected Woodford Habitat to receive part of the money to the tune of $5,000. Thanks to both Dotson and Duckworth. The photo is the presentation at a Chamber of Commerce meeting. Sioux Finney was in attendance and represented Habitat.

As you know, we dedicated Woodford Habitat's 44th home on December 20th. The kickoff day was on August 16. So construction was completed in just four months. Pretty quick for an all volunteer build. We were blessed by an excellent turnout of volunteers. We were honored that County Judge James Kay and Kentucky Habitat Director Mary Shearer both attended the dedication Some photos are below. They include Belinda, her kids as well as Kay and Shearer another photo of the crowd at the dedication.

Look forward to further updates in 2026 as Woodford Habitat continues to pursue its mission of providing safe, decent affordable housing in Woodford County.

PS. It should be acknowledged that while framing started in August, that was preceded by a significant amount of work: identifying the lot, completing the purchase, various regulatory approvals, clearing the lot and pouring the foundation.

Work on the build on Douglas Avenue in Versailles is progressing nicely. Flooring and pouring the driveway have recently been completed. Baseboards, interior doors, cabinets and appliances are the principle remaining steps. The family has been working regularly to get in the required sweat equity hours. We hope to finish by the end of the year, more or less. In the last two months, two families, Mack and Disciplina, have finished paying off their loans. They now own their homes free and clear. The Board continues the difficult work of lining up location(s) for future builds. One photo is some volunteers working on the flooring. The other is from the Disciplina closing. We appreciate the deed related work of local attorney Phyllis Mattingly.
Please be alert for another update in a few days about the annual Giving Tuesday opportunity.

Our build on Douglas Avenue is progressing well. So lots of stuff is happening. Maybe it is a good time to print out some of the guiding principles of Habitat for Humanity International. See below.
Our mission
Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.
Our vision
A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Our principles

Who we are
Habitat for Humanity is a movement of people in your local area and around the world, working together to build more prosperous and vibrant communities by making sure everyone has a decent, safe, affordable place to call home.
Since our founding in 1976 as a Christian organization, together we have helped more than 62 million people globally build their futures on their own terms through access to decent housing. We’ve done that by working alongside people of all walks of life to build, repair and finance their homes, by innovating new ways of building and financing, and by advocating for policies that make constructing and accessing housing easier for everyone. Together, we build homes, communities and hope.
