Today and every day, we appreciate our members and Sheriff’s Office colleagues, along with our law enforcement brothers and sisters, paramedics, EMTs, firefighters and public safety dispatchers across the country, who dedicate themselves to protecting and serving our communities with bravery, compassion and unwavering commitment. These first responders often put their own lives at risk to help others, answering calls for assistance and running toward danger in times of crisis. We salute these everyday heroes for all they do to keep our communities safe and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Today we honor and remember Ventura County Deputy Sheriff Yevhen “Eugene” Kostiuchenko, who was fatally struck by an intoxicated driver while completing a traffic stop on the shoulder of the 101 Freeway in Camarillo on this day in 2014. He was born in Ukraine, served as an officer in the Ukrainian military before becoming an American citizen and worked for the Ventura County Office of Emergency Services prior to becoming a deputy. An 11-year VCSO veteran assigned to the Camarillo Sheriff’s Station, he was survived by his wife and two sons.

May we never forget his service and sacrifice. Always in our hearts.

Today we honor and remember Ventura County Sheriff’s Sergeant Thomas Kenneth Collins, who died on this day in 1975 when the helicopter he was piloting crashed into the Santa Clara riverbed. A 4 ½-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office who had previously served with the LAPD, Collins established the sheriff’s helicopter unit in 1971. Prior to his law enforcement career, he flew helicopters for the U.S. Navy and, as a naval lieutenant, was the youngest commissioned officer at the time. He was survived by his wife and two children.

May we never forget his service and sacrifice. Always in our hearts.

The VCDSA endorses Beckie Cramer PVSD School Board for re-election as Pleasant Valley Unified School District trustee for Area 3. A U.S. Navy veteran, she brings an officer’s discipline, a nonprofit director’s fiscal eye and a PTA parent’s perspective to the PVSD Board of Education, where she has served since 2018, prioritizing parent involvement, fiscal responsibility, education policy advocacy and transparent communication.

A Moorpark resident for more than 38 years, she has a strong professional background in commercial and residential real estate and business ownership, as well as deep community involvement including serving as a Park and Recreation Commissioner and County Parks Advisor. She prioritizes school safety and supports adding an additional dedicated school resource officer for enhanced security.

A former community college student and a lifelong educator, Lou has more than 30 years of school and district-level administrative leadership experience, along with over a decade of teaching and coaching. Since being elected in 2022, he has worked to promote transparency, accountability and professional standards to ensure the VCCCD Board of Trustees operates effectively and in the best interests of students, employees and the communities it serves.

She’s a local business owner, real estate broker and community advocate whose past leadership experience includes service on the Moorpark Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Ventura County Animal Services Commission and Economic Development Collaborative Board of Directors. As councilmember, she has prioritized support for law enforcement, emergency preparedness and crime prevention, helping ensure that Moorpark continues to be recognized as one of the safest cities in California.

Today we honor and remember Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Harvey “Hank” A. Varat, who died on this day in 1973 of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which he contracted from a tick bite four days earlier during a search-and-rescue training exercise in the Santa Susana Mountains. A 14-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, he was instrumental in helping to develop the Department’s SWAT Team, Dive Team, and Search and Rescue Team. He was survived by his wife and son.

The VCDSA endorses David Tennessen 4 Camarillo City Council for re-election to the Camarillo City Council for District 1. A Camarillo resident for more than 40 years and a retired chief deputy who served with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office for more than three decades, he understands firsthand the needs of the city and the importance of supporting public safety. His priorities also include addressing homelessness, promoting fiscal responsibility, improving community engagement between city leaders and residents, and building a brighter future for the next generation.
