On this day in 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the design of the U.S. flag, creating an enduring symbol of our nation and the ideals it represents, including independence, liberty and equality. Today, we join Americans across the country in saluting the Stars and Stripes and reflecting with gratitude on the many freedoms we enjoy under its banner because of the sacrifices of those who came before us. Long may it wave!

Today we honor and remember Ventura County Deputy Sheriff Donald E. Haynie, who was fatally shot in the line of duty on this day in 1970 while attempting to arrest a suspect for he**in distribution at a residence in Fillmore. He had served with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office for five years and was a proud U.S. Army veteran. At the time of his death, his wife was expecting their fifth child.

May we never forget his service and sacrifice. Always in our hearts.

The VCDSA endorses Amy Van Sickle (Van Sickle for Judge 2026) for Ventura County Superior Court judge. She has demonstrated strong judicial temperament and well-reasoned decision-making, whereas her opponent has run against other judges and does not appear to be qualified to hold the position. Please visit vcdsa.org/current-endorsements for our full list of endorsements, and see porac.org/advocacy/2026-voting-guide for an interactive statewide voter guide from our partners at PORAC. Remember to vote on or before June 2!
