Twenty-five years later, we remember.

Like every person lost leaving families in grief; like courageous survivors returned to family and friends; like a grateful society who praised selfless and brave first responders; like all tradespeople who worked to remove every trace of evil acts and then rebuilt with hope, resilience, and skill... LiUNA members and Building Trades Sisters and Brothers were there... and united we remained years after fighting for every person whose health was and remains affected by the poisonous debris...

To come back stronger after 9/11 took a united effort by every person and organization involved; So today, like every anniversary of 9/11 we honor the lives lost, the families forever changed, the courage of those who responded and the trained, safe and skilled workforce who rebuilt.

We still remember. We always will.

Happy Labor Day! Today is a holiday that celebrates us, the American workers. Its origins are deeply rooted in the labor movement, where strength is gained through solidarity. Thank you to our brothers and sisters who were able to join us for the Labor Day parade today. It was a beautiful day to proudly display our pride. Corey Campbell, President and Business Manager

A message from Business Manager Corey Campbell:

I would like to give a HUGE shout out to our members who used their time and talents to come out and volunteer in the community with us. Some on this crew woke up early to spend 12+ hours volunteering on multiple days, and some came after working all night. Our members have the skills, education, and experience to make a difference. Their dedication to our community and to is appreciated and is a great example of why we all want to be a part of this great local.

I reached out to community leaders in multiple towns and cities on 8/12 to extend an offer to help after storms on 8/11 devastated our region. Community leaders put our volunteers to work clearing trees and debris in areas that they felt would be the most impactful for the residents who live there. We also answered the call for several Local 81 Gold Card Retirees who needed help to clear debris and trees from their yards. To see the relief on their faces after we were done was the only thanks that we needed.

Our Local 81 Union Hall was put to good use since the Indiana Laborers' Training Center in Chesterton was impacted by the power outage and unable to hold their scheduled classes. Classes were moved to our location so that the apprentices would not suffer any delay in continuing their education.

Some of our members and their families who live in this region suffered heartbreaking devastation. We all lost power; some of us are still waiting for restoration. The streets were impassable and homes were damaged. We have all been working to overcome. I would like to thank all the members who used their essential skills to help on their own street where they live to make sure that their neighbors were ok without expecting anything in return. I’m also proud of our members who were able to go to work and take care of business throughout this recovery process, when truthfully it wasn’t safe to leave your own neighborhood.

This has been a reminder to us all that there is more good happening in Northwest Indiana than there is evil. Seeing everyone come together to lift each other up and give back where and how they could without profiting personally, even helping strangers during this difficult time, was an inspiration to us all.

Huge shout out to Laborers' Local 81 for coming to the rescue in Chesterton! While we wait to hear from the Governor's office, they jumped in with a crew of guys, a bob-cat and chainsaws to get the Duneland Prairie Trail clear! Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for our community!
