Happy Halloween, everyone! 🎃

One of the best parts of working in nature and maintaining native habitat is that we get visitors sometimes! 🕸️

While spiders may not be everyone's favorite kind of visitor, bold jumping spiders (like the one seen here) are harmless to humans. In fact, these spiders are more likely to retreat when a human approaches them, and they generally do not bite. They will take care of pests for us, though! 🕷️

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Fall Phenology Hikes the past two weekends! We loved exploring the seasonal changes around us and discovering the many ways plants, animals, and fungi prepare for the colder months ahead with you. 🌱🍂

As the third hike in our four-part seasonal Phenology Hike series, this walk offered another opportunity to slow down, observe closely, and connect with the rhythms of the natural world, and we look forward to welcoming you back for our winter hike as we continue observing how the landscape changes with the seasons. Thank you for being part of this journey with us! 🥾

In August, gardeners, farmers, conservationists, and community members joined our Agricultural Land Program and the NWI Food Council at Oases Botanic Gardens to learn how urban agriculture and community partnerships can support local food access and strengthen connections among neighbors. 🌱🤝

Our event took place just two weeks after summer storms devastated the region, as communities, and Gary residents in particular, were navigating the impacts of the disaster. Together, we reflected on the value of community spaces during times of uncertainty and collective recovery.

Oases Botanic Gardens provides a place to grow flowers and food, but it's more than just that. It's also a familiar green space where relationships grow. It's a place where people can gather to reflect, learn, garden, volunteer, share resources, and support one another. It's a reminder that local green spaces in the community can offer an important sense of connection, care, and belonging. 💚

Thank you to the team at Horizon Bank in Michigan City for partnering with us on your annual Horizon Cares Day! We appreciated the opportunity to share information with you about the history of the site and the impact of invasive plants in their area, and to have your help collecting seeds for vulnerable species. 🌱💚

Author and Long Beach resident David Hoppe wrote a story called Moon Valley and Stockwell Woods in the fall of 2019 for his book, Letters from Michiana: Reflections along Lake Michigan's Southern Shore, in which he shared some of the location's history through both facts and personal anecdotes. He has graciously given us permission to republish it as part of our 45 Stories for 45 Years series. 🌱🌳

Located just west of South Bend on US 20, Lydick Bog is a state-dedicated, public nature preserve that protects one of the last remaining sphagnum bog habitats in Indiana. It's one of our most popular preserves, featuring a 1.73-mile trail and spanning 263 acres. This special place is home to many interesting plant species, wildflowers, amphibians and reptiles, and, in warmer weather, a wide variety of birdlife. 💚

As part of our 45 Stories for 45 Years series, we're sharing a to highlight how special 2018 was for our organization. 💚

2018 was a remarkable year in the history of Shirley Heinze Land Trust, a year in which we were honored to receive both the Indiana Governor's Award of Environmental Excellence and the Land Trust Alliance's (LTA) National Land Trust Excellence Award. 🏆
