“It’s going to cause another division of families, particularly American citizens who may have a spouse that’s an applicant for a green card,” said Velasquez.

The Trump administration is proposing a major change to the green card process that could require some applicants to leave the U.S. while they await approval.

"El sacrificio de los de abajo y el privilegio para el nivel de liderazgo es lo opuesto a un movimiento real que pretende representar a los más vulnerables", dijo Baldemar Velásquez, líder del Comité Organizador del Trabajo Agrícola. Después de su conversión personal al cristianismo, Velásquez dijo que abordó su trabajo organizativo con una aguda conciencia de que el liderazgo sea el primero en sacrificarse, no el primero en sentirse con derecho.

"Estas detenciones están teniendo un impacto dramático en la población, no solo en las personas indocumentadas y sus familias que tienen miedo de enviar a sus hijos a la escuela, tienen miedo de ir al supermercado", dijo Velásquez.

"Se han llevado a las madres de sus hijos, a los padres lejos de sus familias", dijo el manifestante Richard Torres. "Y sabiendo eso, no puedo dormir por la noche".

Si bien las detenciones de ICE son una de las principales preocupaciones, Velásquez dijo que el Comité Organizador de Trabajo Agrícola también está impulsando su resolución para realizar cambios en el sistema de inmigración de los Estados Unidos.

"These detentions are having a dramatic impact on the population, not only the undocumented people and their families who are afraid to send their kids to school, afraid to go to the grocery store," Velasquez said.

"They've taken away the mothers from their children, the fathers away from their families," said protester Richard Torres. "And knowing that, I can't sleep at night."

While ICE detentions are a top concern, Velasquez said the Farm Labor Organizing Committee is also pushing forward its resolution to make changes to the U.S. immigration system.

Ohio is home to six detention centers housing detainees for ICE. Prior to January of 2025, there were only two.

We will continue to put pressure on those who are called to defend and serve our community. To uphold a sacred, humble oath to protect.

We feel it is important for the police department and our community to work together. Creating spaces for the community to interact with police in peaceful and non- aggressive situations defussing that deep seated fear of racial targeting. Empathy, understanding, and knowing is powerful and can remove hostility.

We center our gaze on the Christ crucified walking with those who labor in the fields, affirming the sacred dignity of farmworkers and blessing every struggle offered in love, hope, and trust in God’s redeeming grace.
