Redefining Refuge

Redefining Refuge Non-Profit Service Provider and Advocacy Agency for S*xually Exploited and Trafficked Youth 🦋
(1316)

Although the discussion of Human Trafficking is in no way regarded as a comfortable topic in any given setting, the formerly apathetic response and failure to address Human Trafficking that takes place domestically became the catalyst for Founder, Natasha Nascimento; to tackle what has evolved into a modern version of slavery head-on. With research estimating that up to 300,000 American children w

ere at risk each year to be trafficked within the borders of the United States alone, an urgent and local need to develop advocacy on behalf of children without a voice presented itself. The launch of the foundation, Redefining Refuge in 2010, has since sparked a contagious willingness from participants around the world who contribute to confronting and ultimately preventing Human Trafficking. The goal of opening a local Safe House for trafficked youth was realized in early 2013 and is the first licensed home of its kind in the Tampa Bay and surrounding areas that continue to provide a therapeutic safe haven for girls ages 12 -17 that are rescued from this depravity. Since its inception, Redefining Refuge has been featured on a WEDU Documentary highlighting the organizations advocacy efforts as well as the prevalence of S*x Trafficking in Tampa Bay (www.wedu.org/humantrafficking). We have since been invited to the State’s Capitol to present both the challenges and successes of providing Safe Housing to Minor Victims of S*x Trafficking to The Florida House of Representatives Healthy Families Subcommittee as well as the Florida Stands Against Human Trafficking Legislative Caucus; and were featured as a Resource Provider during the 2013 Statewide Human Trafficking Summit at the University of South Florida. More recently we were invited to Washington, DC to represent the State of Florida during the Shared Hope International JuST Response Congressional Briefing: Mapping State Responses to S*x Trafficked Youth.

Stranger danger didn’t disappear. It changed shape.

The stranger we once taught children to avoid at the park can now reach them in the safety of their own home, through a game, an app, a message or a friend request.

We cannot parent today’s digital world with yesterday’s safety rules.

Know where they are. Know who they’re talking to. Keep the conversation open. 🦋🩵

Every extraordinary mission begins with people who simply believe. ✨🎩

To our Believers, Dave & Heather Traynor, Michael & Layne Pepin, Anthony Murgio, Raul Cabrera and Jill Papapnu, thank you for believing in this work, in our kids, and in what becomes possible when people choose to show up.

Your generosity helps turn possibility into opportunity, and hope into something a little more tangible.

Thank you for believing with us 🦋

We are incredibly honored to welcome Singh, Singh & Trauben, LLP as a first-time sponsor of The Golden Ticket; and especially grateful to Simran A. Singh for choosing to stand alongside our mission.

Redefining Refuge was founded in 2010 with Isaiah 61 at its core; words of healing, restoration, and the promise of beauty from ashes.

Sixteen years later, those words remain at the very heart of who we are.

So when a new partner comes alongside us whose own life and work are so openly rooted in faith, righteousness and justice, it feels particularly meaningful.

Thank you, Simran, and the entire Singh, Singh & Trauben team, for believing in this work, investing in these children, and helping us continue an invitation that truly can change everything.

Welcome to The Golden Ticket 🦋

Technology has changed. The responsibility to protect children has NOT. 🦋

Florida has shown us that our laws can evolve too. Now, federal law MUST do the same.

Parents, do you know what’s on your child’s phone? 📱

The digital world changes quickly and the places where young people connect, play, message and share can also create opportunities for unwanted contact, exploitation and unsafe interactions.

Knowing an app is on your child’s phone isn’t about panic or punishment. It’s about understanding how it works, who can reach them, what information it may expose, and what conversations you need to be having.

These are 8 apps every parent and caregiver should know about and use as a starting point for a conversation, not an interrogation. đź’™

Be present. Be curious. Be their safety net.

We were inspired to create this Redefining Refuge educational series after seeing a digital-safety resource shared by the Kenner Police Department. We’re grateful to their team for putting this important conversation in front of parents and communities and for inspiring us to adapt the concept for the families we serve.

Information and descriptions in this series have been rewritten and adapted by Redefining Refuge for educational purposes.
