Although the discussion of Human Trafficking is in no way regarded as a comfortable topic in any given setting, the formerly apathetic response and failure to address Human Trafficking that takes place domestically became the catalyst for Founder, Natasha Nascimento; to tackle what has evolved into a modern version of slavery head-on. With research estimating that up to 300,000 American children w

ere at risk each year to be trafficked within the borders of the United States alone, an urgent and local need to develop advocacy on behalf of children without a voice presented itself. The launch of the foundation, Redefining Refuge in 2010, has since sparked a contagious willingness from participants around the world who contribute to confronting and ultimately preventing Human Trafficking. The goal of opening a local Safe House for trafficked youth was realized in early 2013 and is the first licensed home of its kind in the Tampa Bay and surrounding areas that continue to provide a therapeutic safe haven for girls ages 12 -17 that are rescued from this depravity. Since its inception, Redefining Refuge has been featured on a WEDU Documentary highlighting the organizations advocacy efforts as well as the prevalence of S*x Trafficking in Tampa Bay (www.wedu.org/humantrafficking). We have since been invited to the State’s Capitol to present both the challenges and successes of providing Safe Housing to Minor Victims of S*x Trafficking to The Florida House of Representatives Healthy Families Subcommittee as well as the Florida Stands Against Human Trafficking Legislative Caucus; and were featured as a Resource Provider during the 2013 Statewide Human Trafficking Summit at the University of South Florida. More recently we were invited to Washington, DC to represent the State of Florida during the Shared Hope International JuST Response Congressional Briefing: Mapping State Responses to S*x Trafficked Youth.

They show up when it’s hard, stay when it’s heavy, and fight for kids who deserve better. They are UNMATCHED. Always.

Ady and Celeste know every trafficked child’s name referred to our agency. They sit in the hardest moments, carry stories most of us could never hold, and show up again the next day anyway. They make us cry. ALOT.

And Alex; steady, bright, and the kind of energy that keeps everything moving and everyone grounded (and always taken care of often with the best snacks).

This is not what the work usually looks like…we just happened to clean up nicely tonight.

Happy 9th Birthday to our Chief Morale Officer, Bodhi 🐾🦋

If you’ve ever spent even a moment around Redefining Refuge, chances are you’ve met Bodhi and if you have, you already know… he’s not just a dog, he’s part of the magic.

With his constant smile, gentle spirit, and uncanny ability to know exactly who needs him most, Bodhi has a way of making every space feel a little softer, a little safer, and a whole lot brighter. Whether he’s greeting guests, sitting quietly beside a child, or simply being his happy, water-loving, treat-obsessed self; he reminds us that healing doesn’t always come in words. Sometimes, it comes with four paws and a wagging tail.

Over the years, Bodhi has brought comfort, joy, and even moments of real protection to the children we serve and we truly can’t imagine this work without him.

Here’s to 9 years of love, loyalty, and the very best kind of presence.

Sixteen years of Redefining Refuge 🦋

Sixteen years of showing up for children whose stories deserve to be rewritten in the it’s meaningful and magical ways!

Today also happens to be Social Worker Day and there is no better way to mark this milestone than by honoring the people who carry this work forward every single day. Social workers are the quiet heroes of our communities; the steady hands, the safe places, the relentless advocates who step into the hardest moments and choose to stay.

And of course… we celebrated our Chief Morale Officer, Bodhi, turning 9 🐾 because no milestone is complete without the one who keeps our hearts soft and our spirits grounded.

What a beautiful, full-circle kind of day. 🦋

As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, today we are recognizing someone whose leadership has helped shape the very foundation of Redefining Refuge; our Board President, Jen Gudenkauf.

Jen brings an extraordinary level of expertise, wisdom, and steady guidance to our organization. Her leadership has elevated Redefining Refuge in countless ways, helping us grow stronger, more strategic, and more impactful in the work we do for children and families.

But what makes Jen truly remarkable is the way she leads.

She is present not only in the big decisions, but in the smallest details. No task is beneath her. Whether it’s helping navigate complex organizational strategy or quietly stepping in to handle the most practical needs behind the scenes, she shows up with the same humility and dedication every single time.

She leads without seeking recognition, without asking for credit; simply because she believes deeply in the mission and the children we serve.

We are profoundly grateful for Jen’s heart, her integrity, and the example she sets for all of us.
