Recovery after a hurricane takes more than restoring service. Here are a few steps to prioritize in the days after a storm:

Document damage. Photograph and log damage to your facilities and equipment before repairs begin. It supports insurance and funding requests later.

Check backup power. Inspect generators, confirm fuel levels, and plan for refueling so critical equipment stays running.

Report status and needs. Use Water Tracker to report your system’s status and any assistance you need, so help can get to the right place.
Confirm your contact information. Keep phone numbers and emails current so updates and offers of help reach the right people.

Keep watching the tropics. Hurricane season runs through November 30. Track updates through the National Hurricane Center: www.nhc.noaa.gov

Great work to the operators who spent this week completing FRWA’s Water Distribution Certification Test (Levels 1, 2 & 3) in Bradenton, FL.

Three days of review covering distribution system operations, backflow prevention, DEP rules, water quality, safety, disinfection, and math, followed by exams. It’s a lot to take on while keeping systems running.

Behind every glass of water is a distribution operator keeping it safe on the way to the tap. We’re proud to support the people who do that work.

FRWA is an approved DEP Service Provider for Water Distribution Levels 1, 2 and 3.

To the operators, crews, and utility staff who worked through Hurricane Isaias: thank you.

Whether you were on-site through the storm, on call, or out in the field afterward, you kept water flowing and wastewater safely treated for your communities. Many of you did it while dealing with the storm at home too, and with very little rest.

This work rarely gets noticed when it’s done right. We see it, and we’re grateful for every one of you.

Get prepared! If you’re in the path of the storm, make sure you are documenting all of your assets today. Photos and videos of everything. This is a required step to receive reimbursement. If you can’t prove damages, you can miss out on assistance. Stay safe and know we are here to help however possible!

We urge all utilities in the storm impacted areas to take photos and video of all assets before the storm hits. This will be critical information for FEMA, DEM and SRF recovery funding.
Make sure you have your WaterTracker login and password.
Fuel up, charge up and batten down the hatches western panhandle.
Please make sure you have the correct cell phone information in WATERTracker and have the text message box selected in your profile. This will be critical to receiving updates from FDEP, FlaWARN and FRWA response crews.

Flooding and a minor tornado outlook are on the radar. Now is the time to get ready.

Even a "minor" outlook can disrupt water and wastewater systems quickly. Heavy rain and flooding can overwhelm lift stations, treatment plants, and wellheads. Tornadoes can bring sudden damage and power loss with little warning. The utilities that recover fastest are the ones that prepared before conditions changed, with current plans, working contact information, and a plan for losing power.

Take a few minutes today to get your system ready:
- Brush off your emergency response plan and make sure you have the correct numbers.
- Prepare for potential power outages.
- Make sure your Water Tracker login and password information is current.
- Confirm all phone numbers and emails for your organization are correct.
- Track updates through the National Hurricane Center website: www.nhc.noaa.gov

Is your utility due for a Risk and Resilience Assessment?

Under the America's Water Infrastructure Act (AWIA), community water systems serving more than 3,300 people are required to certify a Risk and Resilience Assessment and Emergency Response Plan to the EPA, and recertify every five years.

These assessments cover everything from physical infrastructure and source water to monitoring practices, chemical handling, and cybersecurity.

FRWA's Risk and Resilience Vulnerability Assessment Program helps Florida utilities work through these requirements, identifying vulnerabilities to natural hazards and malevolent acts, and building a plan to strengthen resilience where it's needed most.

What does FRWA membership actually get you?

Beyond onsite technical assistance, members get access to training and certification programs, continuing education, a resource library, our weekly eNews, and a voice and vote at our Annual Business Meeting, where our seven-member Board of Directors is elected.

FRWA has represented Florida's water and wastewater systems, large and small, for over 45 years. We're a nonprofit, non-regulatory association, not a government agency, so our focus stays on supporting the systems that keep Florida's water running.
