Tallahassee Bach Parley Tallahassee Bach Parley — Baroque music using period instruments – String Academy

The Tallahassee Bach Parley performs music of the Baroque era (approx. 1600-1750) using period instruments. This recreates for our audiences the experience of hearing and seeing Baroque music as it may have been originally performed hundreds of years ago, while generating a fresh sound immediately accessible to listeners today. The Bach Parley is made up of experienced musicians who are trained in

historically informed performance, mainly local professional performers and teachers, and FSU faculty and students. Many Bach Parley musicians also perform in Baroque music groups around the country, such as in Atlanta, New York, Texas, and Boston. The word "parley" in French means discussion, and a key element of Tallahassee Bach Parley concerts is the commentary offered by our music director to engage and enlighten our audience. These dialogues give the audience historical background about the composers and their world, and suggest what to listen for in the music. This entertaining and light-hearted educational commentary connects the audience with what the musicians are playing, lifts barriers between performers and listeners, and creates a relaxed concert atmosphere with an informed and engaged audience. Other programs include “Kids Go For B’roque,” a competition and honors concert featuring talented young musicians from the community performing music of the Baroque period.

“There is no music without harmony.”
— Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741)

For Baroque composers like Vivaldi, harmony was more than structure. It was the foundation for emotion, movement, and musical conversation between instruments.

Centuries later, these works still resonate with audiences through their energy, beauty, and expressive depth.

Today’s concert etiquette is very different from what audiences experienced during the Baroque era.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, concerts were social events where people reacted openly to the music, applauded throughout performances, and interacted with one another during the evening. The atmosphere was lively, communal, and full of energy.

That spirit of connection and shared experience still lives at the heart of Baroque music today.

Experience live Baroque music with Tallahassee Bach Parley at our concert THIS SUNDAY! Learn more at bachparley.org.

The viola da gamba is played between the legs like a cello, but it features frets like a guitar and produces a softer, more delicate sound.

A favorite instrument of the Baroque era, the viola da gamba is prized for its expressive tone and rich blend within chamber music ensembles.
